aww shucks - ctd on TC

Game has been playing just fine on Windows Seven and I can't think what I have done that might have brought the problem as that machine is used just for games and the forums relating to them.

I am in the Solent - the bit of the English Channel between the Isle of Wight and the mainland, and am just past Portsmouth, trying to get to Southampton undetected. Of course I am in shallow water. As I am down to about 10% battery, I have surfaced ( it is dusk and no enemy vessels are patrolling nearby apart from in the harbour), but I am keen to get further along, so I use TC, and if I go to x8 or above, the game ctd's. It has not done that before in similar circumstances, such as the Kiel Canal, so I do not understand what is causing the problem now. I went back to a previous save hoping that might get past the problem, but it has not. I do not know if it might be related, but each time I restart the game now, the crew all start shouting and table-thumping as if I have just had a kill - but I have not, and on one save, even though I was submerged, there was a full complement watch in the tower, bravely peering through their binoculars at any passing fishes...

I usually come back with relief to SH3 after trying SH5 again, which despite excellent graphics and the improvements the mods have given it, is still too frustrating to settle into for me, so I hope there might be a simple solution to this CTD. I seem fated never to get beyond about four patrols before something happens and I have to start again, but I hoped I had put all that behind me switching to the W7 machine...

May i suggest updating your graphics driver?... when i go to 512 or over mine gets choppy but no CTD.... try your graphics driver or maybe running the game in XP SP3 compatibility mode?.... just a suggestion... im not too sure:salute: (EDIT)try taking it slow till ur out of the solent without using TC.

Sgt Raa, good suggestion - I will update the drivers - I think I am about two updates back on them, and yes I will try compatibility mode. I guess I am spooked because it hasn't happened before. :) I will come back on here with results:salute:

ps LUV the Bernard thing!

How close to Southampton were you when you used TC?

Sadly that did not work:cry: It crashes without any compression now, so whatever you were going to suggest Vendor, it probably is not the right area. Just accessing the navmap seems to do it now. I have taken it off compatibility mode and am going to go right back to an earlier save and see if that might get round it - but I am not hopeful. Still, one good thing, the crew are not celebrating a kill anymore :)

If your last known was OK, so then there is hope

aahhh... I have gone back to a save where I am in the English Channel proper, and I have TC'd up to x32, gone to periscope depth, generally fiddled about, and all is behaving ( so far) as it should, so I think it might be to do with being in shallow water between two land masses ( I am guessing, but it isn't where you would normally expect to see a sub is it?).

I can remember once before, probably before GWX, where there was a 'funny' if you were in shallow water, where, if you tried to put the event camera close to another boat, you would get a CTD. Perhaps this is related. Anyway, I have cheered up again. Thank you for your help gentlemen :)

Could be as you describe ...

but I remember the time that you mention, also but I do not use TC as close to the country and not to a port action, but you mentioned the you had only 10% of battery left, so surely you must charge, surface and circulate for a while so you have margin to carry out an attack, and returned with new force :yep:

She-Wolf 08-01-10 11:54 AM

the plan was to charge en route to Southampton under cover of darkness, but the ctd stopped that. Being too close to land may be what the problem was :) whatever, I am somewhere in the channel now and all is fine :)

Excellent!

ah ok, thats certainly far more than enough to run the game properly.

i used to play on an old laptop that was borderline requirements and would have some silly issues with things like this

She-Wolf 08-01-10 02:19 PM

thanks for your concern Tim - nice :)
