New recruit saying hi

Hello fellow shipmates! Kapitan Schneider here reporting for duty.
I've been playing the Silent Hunter series since SH3 and have never stopped playing it.

Recently I downloaded The Grey Wolves mod for SH3 and I was amazed at what modifications have been done to the game. As someone who is studying to become a video games designer, I've decided to join this forum and see what services I can offer.

I'm particualy interested in creating/moddeling the Type XI U-Boat, does anyone know a good moddeling program I can use? Or has someone already beat me too it and already created it?

Thanks to all those who will help!

Ah right....Type XI U-cruisers

Quote:

The Type XI U-boat was planned as an artillery boat; its main armament would have been four 127 mm guns, in two twin gun turrets. It would have also carried an Arado Ar 231 collapsible floatplane. Four boats (U-112, U-113, U-114, and U-115) were laid down in 1939, but cancelled at the outbreak of World War II. Had the Type XI U-boat been constructed, it would have had a completely new hull design and a submerged displacement of 4,650 tons – she would have been by far the largest of the U-boats and the second-largest diesel submarine after the Japanese I-400-class submarine.
Quote:

Huge U-boats, designed in 1937-1938, with 4 127mm deck guns in two gun-towers (one fore and aft of the conning tower). 6 torpedo tubes (4 in the bow and two at the stern, all below the CWL). One Ar 231 small aircraft in a watertight 2.6m in diameter container shaft. These boats were to have a crew of about 110 men almost double that of any constructed German U-boat. 4 contracts (U-112 thru U-115) were awarded to the AG Weser yard in Bremen on Jan 17, 1939 but wisely cancelled at the outbreak of war in September that year and none of the boats had been laid down at the time (some sources mention U-112 as being laid down but that does not make sense).
These boats are often claimed to not only have been completed but sailed, usually on very clandestine missions and for good measure words like SS, Hitler, Bormann and the like are thrown into the mix. None of this is true and they very certainly not black as some suggest as it is somewhat hard to paint something that does not exist black.
Nope, was never modelled I'm afraid.

Thats a shame. I've seen Yamatoforever is working on Z-Plan ships which the Type XI U-Cruiser's were a part of. Maybe he will model that at some point.
But as I have previously stated I would like to do it myself but I have no idea what kind of 3d moddeling programme you guys use to build some of the ships I have seen.

There are many, 3D studio max, Wings 3d, Blender etc. etc.

Send Privateer a PM, he is using a few bits and pieces atm.

Welcome aboard, Kapitän Schneider.
If I may give you an advice : once your modeling training is done (that shouldn't take long), go for small coastal merchants. Of course these ones are not as pretty as other ships... But what's needed here is ship classes that you'll spot most of the time. :yeah:

What I mean is that working on HMS Glorious, for example, and making it look just like the real one would be fine of course, but the bad thing is that it got sunk early in the war, so where's the need to work for many weeks or even months on a ship that hardly anyone will spot in game, hehe. ;)

Good luck mate !

Edit

Max is good, IMO. :|\\
