NATO Fears Pirates Moving,

to South Red Sea.(DUBAI)—The commander of NATO's counter-piracy flotilla said Wednesday that Somali pirates squeezed by a multinational armada in the Gulf of Aden may be shifting some operations to the southern Red Sea where naval forces lack clear authority to stop them.

In addition to one recent attack in the area, Commodore Michiel Hijmans said there have been "a lot of false alarms" where mariners were shot at and suspected pirates were pursuing them.

They need to start using disproportionate force on these pirates. Hopefully with video running, I want to see some skiffs dissolve into red mist.

where are the golden days of piracy, when even freighters were armed. At least an armory full of assault rifles for the crew and a luger for the captain

Kind of hard pulling into port loaded to the teeth with goods and fully automatic weapons. Laws involved. :03:

Hmmm, I think I see another application for UAV's... maybe on modern day CAM ships? Pirates are reported in the area, launch an armed UAV and either hunt them down or shoo them off if they get too close :hmmm:

Oberon 07-22-10 01:41 PM

Not a shabby idea that Pinguin, a small vessel can act as a mothership for multiple UAVs which patrol at an altitude high enough to not alert the pirates that they're being watched. From that point on, a RIB can be deployed to intercept the vessel and once it is evacuated either the mothership can knock it out or the UAV if it is a UCAV could do the job.
Of course, the problem is the cost of UAV/UCAV deployment and construction vis a vis the traditional way. After all, money makes the world go around.

Lets just say a lot less than ransom paid on the cargo of the ship and the dozen sailors.
~$10,000 depending on what piece of gear.

Yes of course,

if they have the right connection :yep:

Lets just say I would feel safer having the companies paying to equip their ships with this gear than letting the sailors develop their own defenses.

If they let the sailors have their way they would build something like this:
