DR Congo oil tanker blaze 'kills 220'

As bad as the situation at the Gulf of Mexico is, it could be worse.

220 people dead 111 wounded :nope:

And some of them were trying to collect the spilled fuel. :nope:

That a tragic accident.

The other oil tanker accidents from Africa really underline the fact that these things just happen there and it's smaller news then, say, the BP spill.

Quote:

  • October 2009: At least 70 people burnt to death when tanker explodes in Anambra state, Nigeria, setting fire to minibuses
  • November 2008: Tanker overturns and explodes in Ghana, killing at least 22 as people scoop up fuel
  • August 2008: Similar incident kills dozens of villagers in explosion in northern Cameroon
  • January 2008: Dozens of people reported dead as tanker explodes near Port Harcourt, Nigeria
  • March 2007: Up to 100 dead in blast after trying to collect fuel from broken-down tanker in Nigeria's Kaduna State

What is absurd is that despite the obvious danger a good number of dead are people who attempted to steal fuel from the damaged tanker.

What insanity!

You'd be surprised what people do when forced to exist in poverty. If they succeed in getting fuel a couple of times they may think that it's not dangerous. Until something happens.

When I first read the Thread title I assume a ship "oil tanker" cosidering the number of fatalities!!:o Amazing so many killed by a "truck tanker", what a terrible disaster!

Mostly because there not US ships off the US coast.

What was that huge leak in the Gulf a few years ago... Ixtoc or something like that. Was a pretty big leak compared to the Horizon yet little was said about it.

Damned awful incident, all from one flipped truck even.

Schroeder 07-04-10 08:55 AM

That is the problem with poverty. People are so desperate to get something valuable that they ignore the dangers coming from that. A real tragedy.:nope:

papa_smurf 07-04-10 01:44 PM

The reason this was so bad, was that when the truck flipped over, ppl were packed in nearby buildings watching the Ghana match, then some idiot lit a lamp and well we know what happend next.

Was watching it on the BBC news channel earlier today - truely shocking.
