Steam and Mods

Fellow Captains,

I have seen that there is this excellent mod called GWX. I would like to try it, but my SH3 is downloaded from Steam. Could someone explain to me the way of adding mods to a Steam-downoladed game?
It's already patched to version 1.4 by the way.

Many thanks in advance :)

Firstly get JScones' JSGME, the handiest program available!

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=171235

Then install GWX.

Have fun, and if you have problems you know where we are :D

Its really simple, just install GWX to where your game is located, in my case its: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\silent hunter 3.

You'll get JSGME with GWX, so it will be installed with GWX. As for adding mods just unzip them to the MODS folder.

Happy hunting:salute:

Yes indeed, JSGME comes with GWX, so you don't have to install it separately. You do, however, want to use the 'Update' function that comes with JSGME to get the latest version. :sunny:

That's the only downside I can think of regarding GWX.....the latest JSGME is not included.

Well, get to work and combine it with all the latest cool mods.

GWX3.1.2.7.4.9.5.2, and waiting for GWblahblahblah.3.

Colleghi Comandanti,

I have managed to play four missions with "vanilla" (sacrificing a total of 1 hour of study altogether, so perhaps the other user was quite right in his warning:D), using a Type II-D. For the time being I have managed to sink a Frachter and a C2 Cargo. Very meager score, but hey I'm still learning. For now I am not using manual targeting, I'll put that later on.

In the very first mission I simply forgot to perform shift and guard rotation among my crew members, as a result they were extremely tired during the whole trip back. Luckily I met no enemy ship or plane. :DL

I wanted to go and sink some POlish ships as well, starting a career in Kiel, but the game (Steam-dopnloaded) crashes whenever I load a mission from there. Odd. Weird. Unexpected and irritating, I add.

Lastly, I still miss the very last piece of GWX, this one: http://www.filefront.com/13954593/GWX3-7.bin/ I simply can't download it. Could some of you maybe try and see if it works (perhaps it's just me, but I think that it's a problem with the website itself)?

I already like very much SH3, it makes you go from utter boredom during navigation and scouting to excitement and well.... immersion during attacks and bombings by airplanes (got some of those as well, luckily no damage). And the satisfaction to see a ship sink, well, wonderful! I think it will increase when I'll learn to do it all by myself.:woot:

Thsnk to everybody for your answers, as soon as that website is so kind to restart doing what it's supposed to do I'll tell you how I find GWX3Gold!

If you decide to get and use SH3 Commander (with or without GWX), you will be able to choose from several "crew fatigue" options that override the game's settings. The "no fatigue" option does away with it altogether, which means you don't have to worry about rotating your crew between rest and duty (which I like because in reality a ship's commander would not be required to perform that kind of crew micro-management anyway).

I have not tried the other options but I would guess they would each be some sort of compromise between the game's fatigue settings and no crew fatigue at all.

I'm amazed it was only 1 hour of study lost to the oceans. Some patrols you barely find anything and then find all your torpedoes are dud (that is MY excuse!:hmmm:) so sinking anything is success in my book.

Ditto.

I lost a three day weekend once.

It was like Ray Milland in "The Lost Weekend," only with u-boats instead of booze and no creepy hallucinations (as far as I know). Plus I didn't have to leave the house looking like a hobo to get my fix. :O:

RegioSommergibile 06-26-10 02:05 AM

Oh, that's just beacause I normally don't study in the evening except in the very last days before the exam. :D But in reality, yesterday morning I should have got on my Canon Law book and read a bit of another that I need for my thesis, and instead went sailing for one hour. Tried to sink a Kustenschiff but I damaged its screws and rudder. Started burning and taking water in the stern compartment however did not go down. So I used my last torpedo (those II-D have few of them, can't wait to get enough renown to obtain the VII class, moreover because it has the CANNON:rock:) but due to a very steep angle of impact it did not explode. :damn: My error.:damn:

Went back to base and then to my books with a sense of incompletion looming over me. Is this game giving me ALREADY addiction? How rapid! what will happen when I get SH4 in my mail then?:haha:

If you're like me it'll sit on the shelf untouched while SHiii & GWX & other fantastic mods exist.

The above link leads to Kpt Lehmann FF account, unfortunately some of the files contained there and also some at the GWX website have been reported as being faulty.

Get the files from my FF account (link above my sig).

No problem, I managed to download it and started a campaign. It's really TOTALLY different from "normal" SH3 and as far as I can tell a way better experience. I'll get on the first wartime mission this evening (I am thinking onhow to get through the Pas de Calais: on one side Dover, on the other Calais cela va etre un trés grand probléme je pense! :D

But can't one start with Type II U-Booten anymore? I liked those a lot, mainly because there is less crew management to do (on the long run it is tiring to shift the crew around, and besides, did a real Kaleun do that?.... I doubt it!). Of course, the Type VII is more powerful.
