A couple years ago it became clear that $4/gal was a critical point for most Americans. Above that, they actually consider fuel economy in cars—a % do, anyway. At this point, clearly they think it needs to be higher to get the large majority of consumers to demand more economy in vehicles—that and democrats never met a tax they didn't love.
On the plus side, it actually taxes people fairly—which is why people will scream, lol. Downside is that it will crush any hopes for the economy rebounding. Not that long ago Obama used to mention Spain a lot as a model for green jobs, etc... doesn't mention Spain these days... |
