GWX: 1939 Flotilla I patrol grids
This might be better-placed in the mod forum, but since it is more of a general question at the moment I decided to post it here...
... I was getting a bit fed up being sent to the east coast of England and Scotland in my Type II, and never anywhere else. So I had a quick look around, and it seems data/Cfg/Flotilla.cfg is the file I am looking for -- is this right? In that file we have lines like "Aug0000=AN26" which appear to specify 5 patrol grids per flotilla per month -- is one of those chosen at random each patrol? Can there be more than five? Finally, using uboat.net, I had a quick look yesterday at where Flotilla I boats were patroling in Aug/Sep/Oct 1939, and while perhaps 50% of the patrols were indeed the east coast of England and Scotland, there were also many patrols to the Baltic, the Kategatt/Skagerrak, to points off Norway, and the eastern Channel approaches. Would there be any interest in using uboat.net to work out just where boats were being sent and redo the campaign assignments that way? For example, if out of 20 patrols in Sep 1939 5 were to the Baltic, we make sure that there is a 25% of getting a Baltic grid in the game. Thoughts? :DL |
The grids used by GWX are the most accurate grids available considering both historical accuracy, and more importantly, game constraints.
I know this because I painstakingly rebuilt the flotilla.cfg file from scratch using Paterson's books and other data sources that I've now long forgotten. |

I'm happy to show patrols from uboat.net which were to the Baltic, the Kategatt, and to points off Norway, which it seems GWX3 does not do. What could be causing this discrepancy? |
You could just use JScones SH3 Commander to change the Patrol Zone assignment to what you want before starting the sim. BTW GWX does not award renoun for patroling the assigned grid, so you can go anywhere you want with no loss of renoun.

I know, HW3 :) But that doesn't really answer me questions :(
Here are a few patrols from Flotilla I boats in Sep 1939 which illustrate my point: http://www.uboat.net/boats/patrols/patrol_398.html http://www.uboat.net/boats/patrols/patrol_385.html http://www.uboat.net/boats/patrols/patrol_370.html http://www.uboat.net/boats/patrols/patrol_164.html |
If you want to reconstruct real life events/patrols then surely using Commander as already suggested would be the best way....otherwise randomisation may send you to a different area when compared with the RL corresponding time frame.

Well, kind of... Many patrols were to English waters, though, it's just that it wasn't ALL of them. I was thinking that a few random grids in Baltic waters would liven things up a bit for GWX. The random element is part of what makes SHIII fun, no? Adapting to whatever BdU, the weather, and the enemy throws at you!
If we follow the SHIII Commander argument to its conclusion, why have patrol grids at all? Just pick a point on the globe and go. Very :arrgh!: and I understand some players play like that and that is cool. However, others prefer the challenge of doing your best in an environment you do not have 100% control over... |

Who knows, you mightn't think it worthwhile. |

Double click on Mission Ediyor then open up the Campaign_SCR and RND files separately to see what traffic there is in the ares you are most interested in. |

I know you Brits have strange ways of spelling words, but this is ridiculous! |
