The United States Post Office Makes Illustrious List

... that of course being my sh*t list. :stare:

Whats with junk mail?

I could scream

I get 10 days worth of legitimate deliveries / month... the other 20 days is pure garbage.

If it werent for delivering garbage these guys would be out of a job!!!

the trash man and the post man are opposites.

the trash man takes garbage away

the post man drops it off.

A-Holes :stare:

Language please. There are rules about the asterisk thing.

I was talking to my postman a couple months back. As i was non challantly throwing the junkmail away in a trash can my apartment complex puts next to the mail box. I asked him, why do you guys deliver this stuff when it just ends up in this trash can? He said something the lines of, "yeah i know, it's silly, but i'm required by law to deliver it anyway"

Way i see it. Look at the bright side. Newspapers are going to be a thing of the past before too long. That junkmail will be handy for bird cage liners, starting charcoal (if you have that nify canister), and all the other things we'd normally use newspaper for.

Understandable to want to shoot the messenger, I hate junk mail too. But in all fairness, it's not the fault of the post office. They're not the ones sending you the mail, and if someone pays the postage for it they are required by law to deliver it.

Oddly enough the amount of junk mail I receive seems to have dwindled since I started getting 99% of my bills, statements, and other legitimate correspondence via email only. Maybe because so much of the junk mail I got was from places I already do business with trying to upsell me on their services. Once everything went to email with those places, I had the option to opt out of their marketing stuff so I don't get it via email and I'm no longer on their snail mail list.

FWIW I'd gladly settle for a bit more junk mail every week in my mailbox if it meant no more telemarketing phone calls. I'm on the Do Not Call Registry, unfortunately that doesn't stop the cable company calling several times a week trying to sell me their crappy internet/phone service, and the people running total scams don't care about the law so it doesn't stop them either. Neither, apparently, do shady collection agencies or the "marketing survey" people. Thank heavens for Caller ID.

Ah cmon junk mail grease the wheels of industry...

Do what I do.. never even makes it into the house. Straight into the recychle bin ... hey kinda like I do with unsolicited email ! :03:

Snestorm 06-15-10 09:44 PM

Drop it in a mailbox. Give it right back to them.

I live in an apartment building with the usual rows of locked mailboxes in the main entrance. We used to take our mail out and leave the junk on the ledge over the row of mailboxes and then when the people who clean the common areas of the building came in they would toss it in with whatever trash came out of the shared bin in the basement and out it would go.

Then we got a new mailperson who left post-its on our mailboxes with snippy little messages saying that if we took our mail out of the boxes and left it on the ledge to be thrown away, he/she would take it back to the post office and report that mail addressed to the "offender" at our address was "undeliverable" and NO MORE MAIL would be delivered to that person.

Which on the one hand I kinda understand but, sheesh, it WAS junk mail. I have heard that you can write "return to sender, addressee will not accept" or whatever the correct phrase is and the postal worker has to take the mail back - but because it's junk mail and "return delivery" or whatever it's called is not included in the reduced rate that the sender gets for bulk mailings, the post office just pitches it. I won't say I wasn't tempted, lol, especially since when there's a lot of junk on the same day - oversized flyers and "coupon magazines" and weekly store ads - the same postal worker usually just stuffs it all down in the box so that when you open the tenant access door it all falls out on the floor before you can grab it. Which is what mostly ticks me off about it, honestly. I don't mind carrying it in and disposing of it, but I do mind having to juggle everything else I'm carrying in order to bend down and collect a dozen flimsy pieces of crap advertising off the floor.

Problem is... I do use those terms around my mother.

occasionally she uses them around me.

I come from a family with a a few hundred years worth of military and nautical history... Literally spanning generations of Marines, Army grunts, Navy Master Chiefs and Merchant Sailors... without words like those... the laundry wouldn't even get done at my house.

in fact i typed this whole post... leaving out at least SIX expletives - it just didnt feel right.

Gee, I throw mine in thef freaking recycling! Don't you recycle? But I agree the USPS is getting nearly useless, and the more they cut back, the more useless they become. I used to have a post box within walking distance of the house, now I have to drive to mail anything. I say dump the whole crap-fest and do away with the junk mail. I never once even looked at any of the political bulls*&t mailers before they hit the recycle can. Money well spend by the political criminals, I mean candidates. :salute:

(So as not to insult anyone or violate subsim's naughty word policy... this post will be using the symbol <o> in place of every expletive i would otherwise use freely, you are welcome to use your imagination to fill in all of the <o> spots with the appropriate filth)

Of course i recycle... whats more environmentally <o> friendly? Printing this <o>, and using jet airplanes and jeeps and vans transporting it all over the <o> country so that it can be recycled OR not printing this <o> crap in the first place??? :88)

Dude, recycling is not the issue here.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_SG9jRGkU_u...er_Sobchak.jpg

I'm talking about the reality that hundreds of millions of dollars are spent by our <o> Federal Government on mailing out useless nonsense.

its <o> idiocracy

its the epitomy of the wastefulness of western society at it's best.

And i maintain that the <o> USPS would serve NO FUNCTION if there were to be a 3 day hault on junk mail... the mail man wouldn't even have a single <o> reason to drive down my <o> street 80% of the month.

Buddahaid 06-16-10 12:05 AM

Yup. The only good thing I get nowadays is an absentee ballot, or a parcel that could have been shipped otherwise.

Jimbuna 06-16-10 07:01 AM

Loads of the stuff here in the UK as well....I simply recycle it unless I see my neighbour across the road who has a double garage (the posh bugga).

He stores it and 'weighs' it in once a year and is happy to boast it takes him away fishing for a weekend once a year :DL

krashkart 06-16-10 09:57 PM

Does he bring back any fish for you? :)
