My Internet problem that won't go away and getting worse
 

For several days I've been experiencing very bad network speed.

Funny thing there seems to be a pattern.
My internet would have great speed from around 4.30AM to 10AM. Outside those times the network is becoming almost unusable with regard to broadband performance. Today I coudln't even load youtube videos. No not streaming smoothly not even loading them up in the first place.

Speed test would show a mere 120-140kbps testing from London(while in the 4.30AM-10AM time period speed testing from London would give me 900-960kbps).
Even testing locally with a Server in my city of residence(Jakarta) would give me only 75% of what I'm supposed to be getting and I should be getting 1Mbps.

I'm smelling that they throttle down(capping) my speed what else could it be. My other friends are not having big issue with his internet while he lives and works less than a kilometer away from me and subscribing to the same ISP.

I remember when I had a chat with a particular Singapore based dissident. He was complaining about very very bad internet speed even when he's using public computer such as the public library computer. It makes me wonder foul play. And to judge with experience it would not be a surprise indeed.

And I am a Singapore dissident though luckily I'm not residing in the island(it was partly my decision too to refuse to go back and very grateful for that decision and I never forget to thank God for that fact)

I don't think anyone is capping your bandwidth, Castout. I get the same behaviour from time to time from my internet service here in the US. Sometimes the larger entities (companies, government) need additional bandwidth for something; that's my guess. I've tried to imagine the reasons in my own mind sometimes; e.g. massive data transfer somewhere on the grid, service outage, upgrades, testing, or perhaps someone in the fishbowl went to work drunk and mistook their workstation for a urinal. :)

The simple truth about the broadband internet provider we have in this region of the US is that they suck. Even their cable TV services are screwy at times. :-?

Were the same here your not on your own Castout. For my ISP 10pm to 7am is good speeds all other times is not that great okay for browsing but if im going to DL something its not much better than dial up! Those who choose the torrent package deal in other words during the day and evening they get the best speeds. I could go torrent but i have no need for it, I can't just join torrent package to take advantage of the speeds either I would have to show that im actually using torrents. Programs like Internet download manager lets me cheat a bit, without it im getting 40-60kbps with it im 200kbps or higher.

My stepbro works for the internet provider I use and he gave me a very good deal on their best 100Mbps service. I still get outages and slower-than-usual transfer speeds on occasion. Maybe with the new, much larger competitor that just moved into the region I will begin to see better service. *pray*

Oh well just that I usually get good stable speed until afternoon. It's just so annoying that now my internet would only be broadband for 5 hours from 4.30AM to 10AM.

But I suppose some govt agency needing large bandwidth may explain the slowdown since it's also that bad even 2.30 in the morning until 4.30AM.

My ISP is upgrading their bandwidth and I upgraded my connection speed to 1.5Mbps too. I hope I would see some improvement with the upgrade. It's just that a friend of mine is not having big issue with his internet at all and he works and lives less than a kilometer from me.

Yesterday my ISP technician called up to ask about my internet problem and half jokingly he mentioned that it was up to 1Mbps and not always 1Mbps.
I would answer him the next time that it's only fair if we pay UP TO certain money too and not always certain amount, depending on the average speed we're getting :rotfl2:.

I could live even with 30% of maximum connection speed especially during crowded times but to get a mere 12% of speed is RUBBISH at any time. It's like when a person is having an IQ of 250 and he only uses 25 of it daily.

Umm so far none of my friends are having slow internet problem.

The case of foul play seems to be more likely, but I'll wait for a few days in the hope it will all be okay and it was a technical problem somewhere.

It's ridiculous that now I can't even seem to finish speed testing a new low is 80kbps.

80kbps for a 1Mbps connection, no correction i'm supposed to be already getting 1.5Mbps this afternoon

I don't know. If they are purposely capping your internet speed because you are a Singaporean dissident, why would they return it to normal between 4:30 and 10?

Also, "less than a kilometer" can be far enough, depending on the problem. Maybe you should ask your neighbours?

You dident mention if it was dsl or cable.

Either way the bandwidth is fixed and is 'shared' with your neighbors. The more logged in the more bandwith being spread around and you get a smaller share.

DSL does not deal with this situation very well.

it's easy for one to let you know you're capped and fuc*ed with. It's easy to know what these people have in their mind once you know just how low that they are truly are. Nothing sophisticated. Bullies and thugs are never sophisticated people even with titles or ties and a suit. Even their lap dogs can't write proper english betraying their Singlish origin when sending death threats over the internet and that even when they tried to conceal who they were. Quite pathetic. On the other hand I consider death threat letters a kind of accomplishment in their own. Me a poor nobody and some people still bother to send me those. Just imagine if I were somebody LOL.

And my problem coincides(more or less) in timing with the launch of Singapore internet exchange(they did promise it to be NEUTRAL but I won't buy anything said by any Singaporean official as the regime is not an independent, credible system but a one man running the whole show)

I'm not saying it's definitely these people but it's a good guess of one of several other possible cause.

And after upgrading my subscription the problem still persists.

No streaming past 10 AM and before 4.30AM. The good news is now the connection speed has gone a little better from 80-120kbps low point to 140-300kbps out of my 1500kbps subscription for time frame outside 4.30-10AM.

I don't think it's my neighbors either. I'm aware of traffic load. I'm not that stupid. It's a pattern and the drop is too significant and too drastic over too short time to suggest a slowly increasing traffic load.

It's pathetic even speed testing from other Asian countries would just give me at most half the speed of what I'm supposed to be getting. It's usually full speed. Not to mention I almost never open any local sites or other Asian countries so that half speed is a wasted speed.

Well that question doesn't justify an answer I'd like to say I'm testing with youtube :O:
Youtube is a vast source of information, education and entertainment. Oh yeah much better than stupid TV or mainstream media. Video on demand at its best(or worst) depending on what you choose to watch.

Well I figure it's long way coming.

When I decided to be an active member of a certain Singapore community forum they sent lapdogs to harass and insult me there after a few years. It was obvious they wanted to get me well agitated and frustrated and it was a forum which they control. To their frame I'm a Christian taliban. Of course I know those people were nothing but lapdogs. Kind of pity them in fact.

And then I decided to write a blog and now they are making my broadband connection un-broadband within a couple months.

I may choose to stop my current internet subscription. I don't pay to get pissed. I may not be checking this forum or the internet for a while when I do.

Would the Singapore government really have so much power abroad that they can command an Indonesian Internet Provider?
Or how else would they achieve the "capping"?

Maybe you should check out with your direct neighbours, see if they have similar problems. If so, it's probably just some technical problem.

Wouldn't that be exactly what they want?

Umm the answer would be yes. My past several years experience has shown that the little Singapore has A LOT to say here in my third world countries. I must assume money is the main source of influence.

Of course the regime picks what kind of people to antagonize.

For example they let go wholly a British man who painted graffiti on the city train recently where he supposed to be punished by canning(beating) that would leave permanent scars on anybody's back The law is retained from British colonial era that was put in use to deter pro independence slogan from being displayed in public. It's quite a barbaric punishment for a petty crime but the regime didn't dare to antagonize citizens from developed countries especially if the person is holding a high ranking business position. But for the rest of the people coming from lesser countries and the kind of countries that couldn't care less with their citizen well they'll treat them as they like.

You're welcome to read my blog especially my first entry and I wasn'tand I'm not exactly a courageous man but if you trample over a person long enough sooner and later he would find out it is no use to remain passive and
tolerant especially when he has done nothing to deserve such treatment. Truth is I've felt numb to fear which is actually not a good thing. As someone defined courage as feeling fear but continue going nonetheless. I would not fit into that definition :hmmm:.

Hey uhh just a thought but are you able to swap out the modem and or router?

Also try known good cables.

Maybe update drivers for the NIC.

Is it a wireless router? Try other channels.. survey the neighborhood for the 'popular' channels and avoid them.

Just a couple of quick thoughts.
