question about fido torpedo

Please - does anyone in here know if the fido torpedo in SHIII is able to change depth - downwards that is - and thereby home in on you in 3D? Or does it only hover around at shallow depths not able to go deeper?

Not 100% sure on this one, all i can say is ive never seen a fido alter course to go deeper/shallower, only side to side until it finds its target.

Theyre quite good fun to watch after theyve been fired though, as they go sniffing for something to hit.

I'm guessing that you set the torpedo depth and the torpedo will find its target...

The Falke (I'm presuming that is what you meant) will remain at the depth you set prior to firing but will change depth if it locks onto something submerged.

Thanks all of you for your replies :DL

@jimbuna:

No actually I meant the US fido, but you say that the falke is able to alter its depth also downwards? That means that if launched from a shallow sub or a surface ship against a deeper sub it will actually dive towards its target, providing that the target is within its sensor cone of course? The reason why I ask is that Zel and I are currently working to make a cold war mod for SHIV. Here the acoustic torpedoes are completely stupid - even the US mk27, which is supposed to be an ASW weapon! cannot home in if the target is below it, it just circles around over it! I know this is an SHIII thread, but I just wondered if this was different in previous versions, I remember that in SHII the fido could efficiently home in on a submarine....hmmm.....well, thank you very much :up:

The Fido was an acoustic torpedo dropped from aircraft on to the swirl created by a crash diving uboat and if it detected the noise of the uboat homed in on it. Are they modelled in SHIII?

No....not in SH3.

ive seen one of my falke torps try to destroy one of my decoys that was 50m deep instead of going after the 10 or so destroyers above, lol. didnt keep track of it very much but i do know for a fact that it was 3m deep for part of its course before then.

Yeah, this is what I meant when I posted this in #4
