Seriously, though I'm no historian, I thought that the Balao was the most advanced of the WW2 diesel fleet boats.

Personally, in the game I prefer the S-class for the extra challenge, though they're more of a coastal cruiser than an actual fleet boat.

Agree with VonHesse
The S class is a lot of fun but difficult to fight.
Also early war the Narwhal is fun with the two 6" guns, I think you would like it.

The easiest boats to use are Gato and Balao, good radar, fast, deep diving and lots of fire power.

Best time would be mid '43+ with a Gato, lots of action around Borneo, Java and Flores seas and up around the Philippines Luzon Strait.
