Question about real periscopes - Up and down mechanism

Hi,

Does somebody know if RL the uboats had a "rise periscope to the to the max" button/lever that automatically rises the periscope at its full? or they had to keep pushing a button/lever until the periscope stopped? And the same for lowering it?

I have not found any confirmation about that I a was wondering if someone here could know something about this.

Thank you

The attack periscope was raised and lowered via a lever mounted on the periscope housing, operated by the officer looking through it; very much like the on-screen lever in the game. Apparently it must be held in position until the periscope is fully up or down, or at the height the viewer desires. There is no 'full up-or-down' switch.

Watchkeeping (observation) periscope is operated by a lever mounted on the overhead by the periscope.

It would never work any other way because of the constant difficulty in maintaing a fixed depth.....otherwise the scope would be a foot above the water one minute and 5 or six foot the next.

Steve is right for the standing or fixed heigth periscope. The observation one, however, was raisen and lowered by a crewman using a lever, following the captain's instructions.
