Anyone care to help me identify a ship?
My girlfriend is doing foreign exchange in Finland (She's keeping a sharp eye out for the ferret-y types, tread carefully Dowly :D)
and she returned from a Rotary trip from St. Petersburg a couple weeks ago, she just uploaded the pictures (being somewhat of a russophile, I asked her to take pictures of anything I might find interesting) and she came across this ship... http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/o...SSIANSHIP1.jpg http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/o...SSIANSHIP3.jpg http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/o...SSIANSHIP2.jpg All I can tell is is that it was made post-1977 (I only have two books that list all of the known ships in the soviet navy and this isn't one of them) I know the numbers they paint on the hull aren't the identification numbers like we do here in the USA. I think it's some kind of tender or amphibious support ship. I did a WHOLE lot of research before it struck me that I'm a SUBSIM.com member. Anyone want to venture a guess? |
Not a US destroyer.
937 would be a Forest Sherman Class. Single 5" mounts. One forward and two aft. Who in the world else has big hull numbers like that? |
the russians, apparently :O:
but they never match up with the actual class numbers, K-19 had 294 painted on her tower. it doesn't make any sense to me, and I'm not going to ask any of my friends here, they aren't narly as into this kinda stuff as I am. |
Can't find anything, no matter how I google it.
Best bet is a library. Janes Fighting Ships. I tryed googling my way in there, but was unsuccessful. |
The arabic on the bridge gave it away. She is a long way from home. :salute:
She is an Algerian training ship Atakor. Built in the PRC as the Type 50A class. :know:  |
:o
but that's a Russian flag flying from the forward antenna mast?! Perhaps the Russians made a recent purchase? |

you have me convinced TLAM! :yeah:
(I can't remember the stripe arrangement on the Russian national flag, I thought that if white was on top it was blending in with the sky) |

Certainly saved me a bit of research work...and still may have got it wrong :DL |
Absolutely brillian TLAM. Not only do we now know that it is an Algerian training ship a long way from home, we also know they were munching at the time of picture taking. Love it :)

Jack Ryan does it again! :salute:
|
How is 3.10 coming along TLAM?
|
Bravo Zulu TLAM. :salute:

I am "officially" working on 3.11 right now. I have completed a LNG carrier, a SEABEE, Japan's new AIP sub the Soyru, and have the ROKN's Dokdo Class LPD in development. |
