You mean like this?

There's been a few bearing overlays so far. The main problem with over 1000m is that you can't see the whole thing at the lower 2 levels of zoom and can't see it at all at higher zooms.

omg yes this is it.. where can I get this and what is with the zoom issue.

That one is the 1000m overlay I use. :)

The zoom problem is that the overlay only appears in the closest two zoom levels, where you can only see about 1200m or so at a time. This overlay is crisper than the others I've seen so far as well. They are larger, but more fuzzy.

Welcome Misterton, there's a reason behind the inverted tools.
Have a look at the pic here (Same one as above):

Notice as you drag the tool out the line that extends thru the tool is showing the correct bearing (With regards to North) in this case 280deg.
If tool was correctly orientated it would have read 100deg the incorrect bearing from your sub to the point your plotting.
Where is is very handy, is in plotting a targets course. If you have 2 points that the sub is heading, draw a line thru the points and on past the target.
Now reading the line that you've drawn from the first point to the tool will show the targets heading (This you need for manual targeting to enter into the TDC for firing solutions).
