High Resolution Fix/Mod that works with ATI cards?

Any fixes or mods that work with ATI video cards to make SHIII Hi-res on a wide screen?

Overkill 05-20-10 10:46 AM

Nobody knows of one or has any suggestions? :(

If you haven't already, check the SH3 Mods Workshop forum. There are a couple of current discussions regarding modding the game to run in a widescreen format. Whether what's there will suit your HW or screen res, I don't know, but that seems to be where all the available info is ATM.

Hey OverKill, Im sorry it took me a while to respond to your post, but I've been busy.

Here is what I did in order to play SH3 + GWX in a 1920x1200 Res in Win7 64bit with two 4870x2 CrossFired.

* Install SH3

* Install GWX Mod

* Install the res mod found here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=1092

You basically copy the files and edit the .cfg file with the resolution that you want the game to run on. I dumped the files into the general game folder.

To play the game full screen and above 1020 Res:

Win 7 and GWX do not mix well. You will get a 3d error if you try to run the game above 1020x780, but this is how you by-pass that.

* Set your Res to 1020x780

* Start the game with the Gray Wolfs game shortcut.

* Either hit the Windows key or Alt+Esc to get back to the desktop.

* Change the res to what you setup in the .cfg file.

* Click the program Icon on your task-bar and go back to the game.

Enjoy the game at your new res.

That I know off, you can not start the game at anything above 1020x780 full screen. The game will crash every time. Because of this, we change the res to 1020 and then change the res back to what we want to play.

If you have any other questions, please dont be shy and ask. Im by no means an expert on this matter, but I can at least tell you what has worked for me.

This is not the case for everyone, I just got a 1680x1050 monitor and I edited the Res_Fix cfg file to run the game fullscreen (with GWX) at that res, which it did with no problem except for things being stretched out too much horizontally IMO because of the game's native 4:3 aspect ratio. (Really the only thing that bothered me a lot was the slideout compass being squished into too much of an oval shape for my tastes - nothing else was all that noticeable.)

Prior to that I was playing on a 4:3 monitor at 1280x960 res, always at fullscreen, and never had to start the game at a lower res and then alt+tab out and change the cfg to get it to work.

Currently I've gone back to a 4:3 aspect ratio for the game and am running at 1400x1050, with an ATI card and the scaling set so it doesn't stretch things out to fill the entire screen. So I have vertical black bars on either side, but I prefer that to the squished compass. I'll probably stick with that until I can figure out a way to "fix" the compass so it's not squished at the WS res, or somebody releases a WS mod that I like and can get to work on my system.

Wow, every time I tried to run it at 1920*1200 it would crash. I tried it in both Vista 64bit and Win 7 64bit. Even after the Res Mod, it would crash. I found out if I did start the game in its native rez, as stated above, I would have no problems.

If you find a solution to your little problem, let me know so I can try to implement it on my rig.

I'm on XP so maybe that's the difference? I've always used the ResFix mod because my old monitor would pop up a notice about any fullscreen app that ran at lower than 1280x960, saying I should run it at the higher res for optimum viewing, well yeah, no kidding! :O: Only for a few seconds when it first loaded but still a PITA. I was so happy to be able to avoid that with SH3 and I've never had any res I set in the ResFix cfg cause me any problems. I just set it and it works.

I played around with the WS mod that's been released in the other forum but it's optimized for... 1360x768? Anyway, not for 1680x1050, and nothing I tried so far would make it run right for me. And really I'd be perfectly happy just to run the game as is at 1680x1050 if I could get the compass unsquished at that res.

Maybe it would just be a matter of finding the right .tga files and squishing them enough in the other direction so they'd revert to something like a proper circle when stretched out in-game. I dunno. As it is I still have a higher res at 1400x1050 than I did on the old monitor.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. :salute:

Good luck :yeah:

For the rez fix, does taking screenshots (with Print Screen) make the game freeze for anyone else?

:yep:

Sometimes the game freezes and sometimes it gives a CTD. That is the case for me. I just stopped taking screenshots.:wah:

LostDream 05-21-10 06:24 AM

x2 for me as well :wah:

frau kaleun 05-21-10 07:14 AM

That seems to be a common problem with the fix but I've never encountered it. Just lucky I guess. Altho I haven't tried PrintScreen yet with the new setup so who knows?

Try to take a screenshot while running the navigation training exercise, for example.:ping:

I took screenshots during the academy exams when I first did them, never had a problem.

With the new monitor I've changed the res and disabled auto rescaling to WS format so I'll have to see if that makes a difference.
