[REL] Magnified Hud Dials for v1.5

Revised October, 2012

Due to requests, I've made a separate mod that will increase the size of the Telegraph, Compass, and Depth dials. The dial images were changed from stock using Jimimadrids base dials (with some adaptation and enhancements by me). The increase in size should help in easier viewing and use. Both American and German sides of play are changed.

This mod has been revised Oct. 2012 to include two separate editions. One will create a larger set of dials than the other. The "Large" version should help those with the larger resolution/aspect ratio screen sizes (like 1920x1080). A "Medium" edition for something in between, or the smaller resolutions (like 1024x768). Choose the edition that suit's your setup.

The following images are of the "Medium" edition on a 1024x768 screen.

The mod is JSGME compatible. It is intended for a stock SH4 game patched to 1.5. Please note the "README" for details and how to merge the files with other mods to prevent conflicts when you change specific files through JSGME.

The "Magnified Hud Dials for v1.5" file may be downloaded HERE

A version of this mod for the SH4 game patched to only version 1.4 can be found HERE.

WARNING

Can a casual player keep track of the various mods that are activated through JSGME to not allow one to overwrite another, causing a conflict? Take for instance JSGME, a change made by two different mods to the same file will create a warning page, with JSGME asking permission to continue. If the files are compatible (one was written specifically to overwrite another) there's no problem with the change. If a file is changed just to satisfy it's intended purpose without regard to any other changes, all hell can break loose.

For the ability to have larger dials appear in the HUD, the menu_1024_768.ini file has to be changed. This file tells the game where, what, and how a 2D object gets put unto the screen. Many mods rewrite this file to accomplish their intended changes. But, when one change doesn't include another for the same file (the game will read only the last file that JSGME has activated, this is why the order of activation in JSGME is so important) parts of the first file will be lost. That's why I state in the README for MaxOptics, place the mod after it's intended compatible mod.

With the "Magnified Hud Dials" mod there's a good chance it will be used with other mods and BAMM, it will conflict with any that changes the menu_1024_768.ini file. Whatever menu_1024_768.ini changes an earlier mod may make through the activation "order" of JSGME, the Magnified Hud Dials (MHD) will change it (removing it's intended purpose). Any modded menu_1024_768.ini after MHD will do the same to it. This is true with any same named file.

So when you throw in the kitchen sink and have a JSGME list of mods as long as your arm for use, now you'll know why things don't work as intended. :88)

This is important for any modified file. For any text file, using WinMerge and studying the files modified, changes can be made quite easily to make the files compatible. Data files are much more difficult to merge as the changes often are unique and at the heart of the mod. Changes to the camera data fle are a case in point.

Capt C, thanks for this mod; it helps my tired eyes.

Just downloaded and can't wait to try out this one... the stock dials have always been WAY too small to suit me. Thanks, scurv. :salute:

I've revised this mod to include two separate versions. One will resize the dials larger than the other. Both enlarging the dials over the stock game. With the recent monitors becoming greater in size, and resolution/aspect ratios becoming larger, the ability to choose between a couple of different sizes for the dials seemed the right thing to do.

The first post in this thread will take you to the revised mod download. Or go HERE. This version is for the 1.5 game.

If you're using an SH4 game patched to only a 1.4 version, use this LINK to it's download.

Any chance this would work properly with TMO and/or RFB?

As Irish1958 points out you have to be careful how you add mods with JSGME. Particularly, what the order of activation is.

Know this: The last file loaded in JSGME will supersede any other "like named" file.

Many mods change the menu_1024_768.ini file. If the file is not made specific to be compatible with another mod, the changes made by the last mod loaded thru JSGME will hold precedence over an earlier loaded mod.

That being said.....Yes, you can make the Magnified Hud Dials work with any mod.

In the Magnified Hud Dials download, you'll find a document called "Magnified Hud Dials Changes". This text document will help in explaining what is changed with the menu_1024_768.ini file. You can make the mod work with any other mod as long as you make the changes pointed out in the text document. Just remember to make a copy of the original .ini file that you plan to change (find it in the TMO or RFB mod), and put it in a different place than where you found it. Open the original file with Notepad, and manually change the specific entries as the document says. Remember to "save" the changes before exiting. Don't forget to copy/move the Magnified Hud mod images (the .dds files) and put them into TMO or RFB. Put them into the same folders as the Magnified Hud Dials mod. You're done. TMO, RFB, or another mod will now have the Magnified Hud Dials included in it.

Simply follow the folder structure of the Magnified Hud Dials mod.

Many thanks for the mod!

A question: Is this mod compatible with your OTC TMO RSRDC version? Or it´s needed editing of the menu_...file. I know OTC is a very delicate equilibrium of many things...:hmmm:

Best regards.

Hi fitzcarraldo,

no the Magnified Hud Dials are not compatible with any other mod. The stock game menu_1024_768.ini file is what's in the mod. You would have to use an app like WinMerg to blend the Magnified Hud Dials changes into the TMO mod .ini file. Or, in the case of the "OTC for RSRDC v502 (the RSRDC version for a TMO 2.5 modded game) you would do the same thing with the OTC menu_1024_768.ini file.

In the download of the Magnified Hud Dials there is a .txt document (also in Windows Word format) that explains the specific entries that are changed. The Word document has the specific changes highlighted in red.

The menu_1024_768.ini file can be opened with Notepad, so just follow the entries and make the changes into the mods .ini file. Do this AFTER you've made a copy of the original file and stashed it in a safe place. There's only about a dozen specific entries that need to be changed.

If you want a custom dial size that's larger than the one I've made....lower the figure's below that's highlighted in red:

[G3F I35]
Name=Heading
Type=1026;Menu group
ItemID=0x3F1D0000
ParentID=0x3F010000
Pos=247,62,50,50
Zone= 759 120 50 50 0 1 0x3F010018 0.5 -1 0x3F1D0000 -0.5 1 0 90
Color=0xFFFFFFFF

This is the entry for the Compass from the Magnified Hud Dials_Large.

Want a larger dial? Change the "50" to "45". Want a smaller dial? Change the four entries to something like "65". The stock entries were set to "90".

Many thanks, Cap!

Best regards.
