Silent Hunter 5.0 -- Silent Force?

Okay, so as far as I understand it, when Falcon 4 first came out, it was nigh unplayable due to missing features and bugs, far, far worse than SH5 right now. But then the community got hold of the code and turned it into Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, which is today renowned as one of the best flight sims on the market.

Is there any hope of Ubi doing the same for SH5 when they're done with the patches? Just give us the source code and let us have at it? Not that it isn't already incredibly moddable, but it would be nice to see a full-fledged "community coded" version of SH5.

Would be nice, but we pleaded for the same for SH2,SH3 and SH4...never happended

That is probably a more practical way of producing a realistic subsim than building one from scratch. A group of modders approach Ubi with a favourable offer, produce a new, improved SH5 and sell it.

That was the approach taken with "Falcon 4:Allied Force" and "War in the Pacific: Admiral's edition".

Whether Ubi would be interested is another issue. In the case of "Jane's F/A-18" which was released in 2000, modders tried for years to approach EA with no success.

Ah well. We can dream, can't we?

Only if someone "leaks" the source code, which is what happened with Falcon 4.0

Falcon's source code was not freely given to the "community", it was stolen. IIRC, Hasbro decided not to press charges against the culprit(probably because the game was so buggy). Somehow, I think Ubi would respond quite differently than Hasbro did.

....and the game still CTD half the time.

I'm hoping something will happen, as im sure a lot of other people are (judging on the number of threads on the matter). I own SH3 and SH4 and in my own little way have enjoyed them both thoroughly. There seems to be little point in me moving from SH4 to SH5 if the gameplay is going to be dire. Afterall, some of the environment mods for SH4 make it look pretty damn realistic at times.

I think a "community coded" version of SH5 might just be missing one of Ubi's new...um 'features',so can't see it happening.
Pity they couldn't let the modders loose on SH3/4 code though...

Wow.. I feel better now. I was SOOO into Falcon 4.0. It was the first F-16 simulation and what I fell in love with simulators over. (I was in the Air Force at the time in Germany.. so the 'immersion' was intense). :)

I didn't know anything about modders back then.. internet was almost nothing. Surely not an awesome forum like this place to help people.

CTD.. wow... remembering going insane all the time.. I wish I knew it wasn't me the whole time. :)

Back in the day?
Alot of source was 'leaked'.
Most proved to be intended after the fact.
Why Ubi clings to old code is beyond me.
It can only serve to create even more sales for them if they
release source code.
But they are a French Group after all.
They have a totally different outlook on things business wise.
You can find many posts regarding this
'French Connection'
if you look hard enuff.
