Hi.

Im not even sure that the above name is the correct name...

I want an idiots guide to using that above mod installer. Ive been playing SH4 for long enough to want to try my hand at loading up a new boat.

I wanted the skipjack. Ive found it and the JSEGME or whatever its called but it all looks rather difficult to use.

I would be very gratefull to anyone with a mongs guide...

Please forgive this entry if there are already these guides and I havent looked, it is 0048hrs....urgh....:(

This should be enough to get you started. The rest of the help file can be found in whatever directory you installed JSGME in.

==Using the Generic Mod Enabler==

1. Ensure that you have a clean, unmodded installation of your game, preferably with the latest patch(es) installed.

If you are already running a prior version of the Generic Mod Enabler, disable all enabled mods.

2. Install the Generic Mod Enabler to your game's root folder and run once. You will be asked to enter a mods folder

name. Unless your game already uses a folder called MODS, it is recommended that you simply press OK to accept the

default MODS name. The chosen folder will be created if it does not already exist. At this point you should take a

snapshot of your "clean" game files by selecting the "Generate snapshot of game files" option from the "Tasks..."

list. This snapshot can be used to verify the integrity of the game files at a later date, after you have installed

and uninstalled mods (see "Further notes on usage" for more information).

3. After downloading a mod, unzip it into a sub-folder under the MODS folder (call the sub-folder what you like, but

use something that defines what the mod is). Note that the modder may have already set up the mod to be "JSGME

compatible", in which case this step and the following step will be done for you. In such instances follow the

installation instructions that come with the mod.

4. Ensure that the unzipped files under the new mod sub-folder replicate the game's folder structure. For example,

with Silent Hunter III you should see something like:

- SilentHunterIII
+ data
documentation
- MODS
- The Mod Name <created at step 3>
- data
- Menu <etc...>
+ Support

5. Run JSGME.exe and you should see the mod listed as an available mod. Simply select and press the ">" button, or

click and drag from Available Mods to Activated Mods and the mod is installed!

That's it! Repeat steps 3 to 5 for each additional mod that you want to install and then simply exit the Generic Mod

Enabler and load your (now modded) game as usual.

Hmmm..having problems at the first step. When I try and download it straight to the SH4 root folder it says I havent got admin rights to do that!!!??? LOL (Its a brand new PC and having some owner or owned issues lol) I tried saving to desktop then moving it into the main SH4 folder which worked ok but then when I tried to run it said ir wasnt a valid win32 file? :( Urgghh...

Ha hhhaaaa!!

Right Ive got the first steps done and created a snapshot all succesfully. Ive tried to download my first boat (the skipjak) and its coming out as just a RAR file..?? Ill try this and see what happens..

Try logging in as Administrator. It may be that you established a separate user account for yourself with limited admin rights. That is not at all a bad idea. It can prevent lots of exclamations that begin, "Oh S*** !!"

Good hunting.

That's correct. RAR files use better compression than a zip if I remember right. You'll need a program like winrar or 7zip to unrar it.

It sounds like you've got past this stage already, but just in case there are still problems:

If your computer's stopping you from moving things around/running things on your C drive, then you should disable user account control (that's what it's called in Vista anyway) as this prevents you from editing files on the hard disk. Type it into the search function on the start menu and you should find information about disabling it.

You then need to get a compressed file extractor. A RAR file is like a zip file, so it needs to be unzipped, then you can move the unzipped folders to your MOD file that JSGME uses. I would recommend 7zip, it's free and can unzip a range of compressed files. Here's the link to the site:

http://www.7-zip.org/

once you've installed 7zip, right click on the RAR file and select 7zip>extract files and then extract them to your mod file - the mod should then appear on your mod list in JSGME.

Hope that helps.

edit: Ah, poster above has got there already!

Thank you

Guys

Can I please say that Ive paused a beautiful attack by my new Skipjack class sub to say a HUGE thanks. Its a peach and is now up and running.

Thanks guys.

For future all I was doing was not creating a MODS folder within the SH4 main files. Therefore SGME or whatever the hell its called wasnt picking it up.

Love you guys

PS Just launched a torp from 300 ft!!! And just about got back up from +650 feet !!!

Great!

You'll start to find that JSGME in one of the most useful things on your computer once you've downloaded a selection of mods!
