Reinstallation of SH3 to Install GWX3
Yesterday I ran into a problem trying to upgrade to GWX3 from my current GWX2. In order to upgrade to GWX3, you need to perform a clean install of SH3 and run the SH3 1.4b patch After uninstalling both SH3 and GWX2, reinstalling SH3, I then tried to run the SH31.4b patch. I get the following error message:
"The Program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter US DVD v1.0 to v1.3 because of the following reason: C:\programfiles\ubisoft\SilenthunterIII\data\Menu\ de_help.txt: unknown version." The update program must be looking at this de_help.txt file to allow the update to proceed, so I am not sure why the update SH3 files does not like my reinstalled de_help.txt file. I uninstalled and reinstalled SH3 twice, used my second copy of SH3 disk to reinstall SH3 to run the update, and I still get the same error message. I even tried updating SH3 to v1.1 first, and I still get the same error message. I previously had not had a problem updating SH3, and have never seen this error message before. I also noticed when reinstalling SH3, the installation program does not ask me for my Install Key Code either, while at some point in the past the SH3 program requested the Key Code. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem or not. I could not find the answer to my question in the GWX Support site, so I thought I would ask those in the know here for possible answers. Thanks for your help. :06: MWV |
Delete the de text
Is replaced by the 1.4 patch anyway and for some reason is a common error in updating |
Deleting the problem file worked. It did not occur to me the deleting the file would not cause other problems. Thanks for the help. SWX3 is now loaded and working fine as well.

That one file - de text - is the cause of many a post in the forums while reinstalling Cant understand why the patch doesnt like it |
Which parts of GWX should I enable?
|
If you have successfully installed GWX over your stock SH3 game, you don't have to do anything to enable it. It's there, baby!
If you're talking about the optional GWX mods in your new MODS folder, there is detailed info on all of them in your GWX user manual. Personally I won't sail without Integrated Orders. I also like the Enhanced Damage mod, and used the 16K Atmosphere mod before I started experimenting with environmental mods from other sources. Be aware, though, that some of those mods - the 16K Atmo, for instance - will increase the demands on your system. The basic GWX install was specifically designed with the original SH3 system specs in mind, but that's not necessarily the case with optional mods that come with it (or any other mods, for that matter). Which is why you should read about them in the manual to see which ones you want, and then experiment to see which ones you like and which ones don't overload your rig (if that's an issue you're even concerned about). |

I never played much stock or GWX without IO, so specific examples are hard to come up with. But in general what I see that it's doing is making more "order" options immediately available when you click on each of the officer icons.
Also all the icons that do come up when you click on your officers come up right above them for quicker access with the mouse. IIRC in both stock and GWX w/o IO, some groups of icons would come up in the lower middle portion of the screen instead and were noticeably bigger than the IO versions. Considering that they tend to stay onscreen until you click elsewhere, it kinda obscured more of the view than was really necessary. |
