Mixed torpedos, is that historical?

Usually i load sub full of electric torpdoes and not bubble makers but when i dock at supply ship then there is no such option and i get absolutely desperate mix of electric and steam torps.

Was it historical, any good in this setting, why it is that way that i have 2 electrical and 2 steam torps ready in fwd tubes...Dang, bubblemakers alarm when salvo and will mess electric torps too when ships do zig zag away...

Having all electrics is not historical, as they had to be checked every few days and couldn't be stored in the external holds.

There was also a shortage of them for quite a while in the early part of the war.
Early on I load out with just 5 of the 7(e)s.

I take what I get, I actually prefer steam torpedoes (increased range/speed)
I just get to within 350m-1000m then they can't evade them.

Jimbuna 04-01-10 06:53 PM

Steam eels were the most common.....electricals were often few and far between.

Not to sure if historically electrics were more reliable than steam, but I find slamming a steam torpedo in to a ships hull at 45knots almost always sets the damn thing off

I would think that a mix of torpidos was desierable, when they could get their hands on a mix of them any way, for the captins back in the day. That way they could match the torpido to the situation that they find them sleves in.

'Bubblemakers' are good in my books, but need to be fired at close range (300-500m) in daylight to lessen the chance of a ship spotting it and evading it.I never really liked the electrics because of their low speed and range.
Steam torps are ideal for me because I attack up close anyway...usually :yep:
A couple of E-torps can be useful in the stern tube/s for emergencies against pursuing destroyers etc.

You canselect and unselect the eels of your choice (providing they are available) from the upgrade screen at your base prior to leaving on your patrol.

Everytime I read "bubblemakers" it makes me laugh.

Even in later 1942 when the T3 had been fully implemented some submarines were using T1s (although by then general loadouts favored electric torpedos by about 4:1).

T1s still had many advantages over electric torpedos. They required less maintenance and had a higher top speed of 44 knots (although in practice submarines used the 40kt or 30kt setting). T2s and T3s both operated at 30 knots; T4s at 24. Set to its faster speed of 40kts the T1 still outranged all other torpedos issued during the war.

I've been using them since the start in 39' it's mid 40' now and ill probably keep using them since I find them so reliable. Most of my attacks are done between 18:00-06:00 so they can't see the wake made by the torpedo. Also I make a point of aiming ahead of bridge during daylight attacks, this way when they finaly see them and change speed you still ensure a hit.

G7A was the better torpedo.
G7E was the more condusive to mass production.
