SUBSIM Radio Room Forums - Escorted Convoy attack strategy

After getting some great advice on general stalking & intercept tactics for convoys, I have been having some success in this area. Basically, I can now get ahead and in good position to attack. I fire 4 torps and generally hit with at least 3, but the long reloads make prosecuting an attack with torpedo’s ineffective after that. I therefore surface and let them have it with the deck gun.

This just seems wrong to me, (can remember mass scale deck gun slaughter in Das Boot).

Right or wrong, my “happy time” was cut short last night when I was setting up an ambush and spied a destroyed riding point for a 6 ship convoy. This makes thing more interesting. I can either.

· Sit and wait till the escort passes me by, launch 2 x 2 torpedo salvoes and hopefully sink 2 of the cargo ships. Then turn 90 degrees away from the escort and run for it, with my stern torpedo as a defence.
· Get the escort, (I think here may be only one), first, then take on the convoy at my leisure. This plan may work but I think there may be another escort I haven’t seen yet. Single escorts seem a little pointless to me.

There may be strat guides for SH3 or 4 that apply here. I will have a look there as well.

ps. [TO DEVS] Can you please make the bridge crew get back in the bloody sub when it goes under. Nothing spoils the ‘immersion’ more than seeing my watch officer stood there under 50m of Atlantic water. :arrgh!:
