Never Saw This

Currently on patrol in '43 in the Marshall Isls. Patrolled close to Maloelap. Radar picked up contact, which turned out to be a fat freighter at anchor in the bay. Closed on the surface at night at slow speed, when all of a sudden I hear a grinding noise like I ran aground. My speed dropped to 0, but no damage. Turned out the whole bay was protected by sub/torpedo net. Forget about the sitting duck now. First time I came across this. RFB and RSRD. Gotta love it!

Yeah I remember the first time I experienced one of those nets :o. I was a quite shocked, because I wasn't aware of their existence. Awesome to have that in the game huh?

You can get around them by navigating carefully, that's fun and exciting :yep:.

I got one late war in a Balao, I was pissed because I wasn't even meaning to venture near the islands. suddenly I'm sunk and it wasn't until a close inspection later that I realized I ventured lose to a netted island. I always enjoyed a midday excursion into Truk. with the enemy always being really REALLY close, it's a rush to sneak into that harbor. I mentioned midday because it's more of a challenge when there's no nightfall to hide you

The nets were originally added as a substitute for missing reefs since SH has no reefs in my old campaign mod. Lurker used that chunk, then added even more of them for RSRDC. A subsequent mod added a few "reefs" as terrain changes (shallows), but the nets are still required in many cases an an analog for reefs.

If you find a RL map of the various islands, and see where the passes are in the reefs, you'll have an idea where the enemy ships might exit.

There are nets around Palau Islands. I darn near ran into them. There are openings , but they were guarded by subchasers.

Again, they are REEFS, not nets. :yep:

Most PTO islands had reefs around them. Since SH4 didn't come with reefs, they needed to be added, and the only thing we had was sub nets.

You can get around them by dropping to 200 ft. Then go slow and come up to peri. depth. The you can shoot torpedos at the freighters. I'ts fun.

I'd like to see you try to get under a reef :DL

You can play with infinite torpedoes, too, if you like.

They are stand-ins for reefs. By passing them is cheating, frankly. RL boats didn't go in past reefs like that.

If you want to penetrate a harbor, get a RL map, then use one of the passes, and only exit via one as well.

Or, by all means, cheat ;)

nice map btw !

I'm pretty sure that in RL they never entered lagoons like that..

The IJN sent midgets or Kaitens in them (UIlithi) but not submarines either

just my 2 cents

Just nosing the boat in towards a harbor that was open like Wewak was literally Medal of Honor stuff.
