We need a Silent Hunter 5 thread like this!
Man, this guy is my hero, he makes the most out of an SH3 patrol. :yeah:
|
We had one for snazzy patrol stories, not to much participation though....

Indeed, great read so far.
What the Dwarf Fortress (see the General Gaming thread) community loves to do is play "succession games" -- that is, they start a game thread and then take turns playing, each of them posting screenshots and text as they go along. The fact that they take turns playing keeps the narrative from growing stale, as each player plays only about one game year (two RL hours or so) each. For an example of a really good succession game, read the critically acclaimed Boatmurdered. Couldn't something similar be done for Silent Hunter 5 -- a "succession patrol"? The participants would agree on mods, time period, mission and whatnot, and then mod the game to restrict time compression to some low number like 32, and then play a set number of game hours or days each, posting screenies and text narratives as they went. You could also do a "succession campaign", I suppose, starting a career for then to take turns doing patrols, with the goal of producing as lively and richly illustrated narratives as possible. Just a pity there's no elephants:nope:. |
I've posted a few short stories, but haven't been on a memorable patrol since, waiting on DarkWraith's new UI first. heh

That's a nice read, as well as a great tutorial for beginners wanting to try cranking up the realism settings. Everything that works for SH3 basically works for SH5.
:ping: |
yeah, sh3 with its mods gives a lot of immersion and atmosphere...
:salute: could be hard writing the same for sh5, yet... |
WOW! That's so freaking cool it makes me reinstall SH3 O_O. If only i knew any other mods that can improve gameplay besides GWX :shifty:

An idea
Do you think that players with the same version of the game could 'share' a patrol by emailing the saved mission file(s)?
I think it should be tested, to allow players to share the same boat, standing watch 'as it were' for an agreed number of hours per game day. Then save and share out the saved game file(s) to all players who are sharing the patrol. I'd say four officers per patrol. Each would take his turn at an agreed schedule and in sequence. The others would not play the mission until they (1) receive the latest saved file(s) and it is their turn. Any officer could look in at what is happening without saving anything. If it is getting dangerous, and not your duty, get out without saving. Anyone up for a test? |
One of the thing SH5 needs in order for such a blog to be fun is a little more variation in targets. Currently there are like five merchants and two tanker models to hunt. No small-fry, no tramp steamers, no huge white steam liners.

Yea I've seen a couple of patrol storys.. Dowly had a 1xtc one going. Unfortunatly they get buried fast under the whines, opinion piece, bug reporting and so on.
It should calm down soon. But that is a good point that we all are basically playing the same campaign with the same crew so there would be some repeats. Anyhow... Hey .. Neal was browsing RPG.net :haha: |
