Is using periscope underwater cheating?
 

Hi all.

In SH3 and 4 I would have external views on so I would have something to do while I was waiting for something to happen. However I often could not resist the urge to use the external views to give me better situational awareness (obviously cheating). Since you can now walk around your submarine, I feel that this can give me something to do while waiting for something to happen, so I turned off external views for greater immersion.

Finally to my point.

Now I find myself using the periscope underwater to give me better situational awareness. While my periscope is underwater, I can see ships and the ground very clearly, even at night. I have personally not spent much time underwater, so I am not sure of the actual translucency. Underwater photography does show that in the day time, you can see a good distance, but I would think at night everything would be black.

So my question is did real submarine captains use periscopes underwater (submerged periscope), and is using the periscope in such a way cheating?

Maybe not cheating . But certainly nor realistic either.

modern subs use periscopes to visualise underneath ships and their screws i guess for intel and advanced sub driving. i believe its fairly common practice for australian submarines. increadible feat to achieve. obviously not having done it i guess it would depend on the ambient light of the day as to how well you could actually see.

Daytime or night, I dont think the kaleum could see anything in the periscope while submerged - definitily not in the Atlantic ocean. Come to think of it, perhaps it would require a special lense to see underwater?

Yep, agreed, you can definitely see to a degree using the scope underwater. On both sub rides I went on, the XO and the Captain used the scope to sweep the area before rising to PD.

Now, does SH or other sub games give you the realistic limits in distance and lighting, I don't know. But in day time, you can see 100 feet or so.

not a cheat, and in fact very realistic. On my trips with submarines it was allways done before/during surfacing iot see if there are stationary/silent ships close by.

It's cheating and you have been very bad. Now go clean your room!:D
