Who watched "The Pacific" ????

Just curious who watched The Pacific tonight(last night) on HBO? Really enjoyed the show so far, going to be a good one.Really enjoyed the last part where they were singing happy birthday to Sid Phillips...made me laugh.

It is airing tonight in my part of the world. I will definitely watch it. Good to hear it was a good show. :)

I watched it. Even got HBO back after dropping it for awhile, just so I could watch it. It was only 1 episode, but I think I made the right decision.

I just got done watching the first episode a little while ago on my computer. It had a special meaning to me as I have a son who in the Marines finishing up his MOS in North Carolina. While watching the episode all I could think of was my son in Afghanistan or somewhere else like that.

Haha, indeed it was a good one. :)

One remark so far, the episode lasted for 45min, instead of 1h as they advertised it. I guess we will see that missing 15 min in another episode. Or it might be that the time just flew by so fast while I was watching.

I watched it

Maybe I am wrong but I thought the firefight at the creek - was to the right of our landing and thus the Marines were on the opposite bank as shown last night.

I have not looked this up but my memory was that we were on the left bank and the Japanese were on the right bank as they had landed on the northeastern tip of the island.

Am I wrong? It wouldn't be the first time.

Japanese troops were dropped on both sides of the American beachhead. Usually when Jap DDs dropped off their troops on the east side, they would shell Henderson Field on their way home. I honestly don't know for sure, but the battle could've taken place as shown.

I was curious about this as well. The show was correct. If you look up Battle of the Tenaru on wikipedia it shows where things took place. The Marines took up positions on the west bank of the creek/river.

Something just stuck in my mind. Why did the Marines on the island have the same haircut they did before they joined the service? No hair regs in those days for recruits?

danurve 03-16-10 08:21 AM

I was sort of expecting some boot camp stuff but they went right into the island, hrmmm. How'ed you like to be they guy carrying that 1/2 ton machine gun craddle around in a fire fight? ;)

Bubblehead1980 03-16-10 07:37 PM

I think boot camp will be adressed in future episodes when Eugene Sledge joins the Marines.Purchased his book "The Old Breed" and going to read it soon after finish the book I am currently working on.

Did you watch it on the internet or some other non-commercial platform?
I would think that the remaining time would be for broadcasting commercials (?)

HBO's series episodes are often a little longer or shorter than their nominal length as, unlike broadcast TV, they aren't locked into strict hour- or half-hours blocks. Works better for the filmmakers, too, as it gives them more flexibility.

HBO Doesn't have commercials that interrupt the programming. That's one of the perks of paying for a premium channel.

I liked the episode. I'm hoping it gets to me the way Band of Brothers did. That miniseries was amazing, and this one looks like it has the potential to surpass it.

Could you imagine if Hanks and Spielberg (and the whole Dreamworks crew) did a similar project with submarine warfare?

I'm just glad about all the high-quality WWII stories we've had on film in the past decade or so.

Flags of our Fathers, and Letters From Iwo Jima were pretty amazing too.
