Do I need the tour for U505?
Hi there,
in about one and a half weeks my wife and I are gonna visit our new and shiny nephew :DL in Chicago. Naturally I want to go to the Museum of Science and Industry and have myself a good look at the u-505 exhibit. Now I wonder if I do have to get ticketes for the tour. I'd rather not have a tour through the uboat. I'd hoped you could just walk through there like you can do with the USS Cod in Cleveland (was there last year - really really great...go there!! :yeah:). So I guess my questions are: Do I have to take a tour to see the insides of u-505? If so, do I have to book in advance? And further if so, do I have to book in advance weeks before or just a couple of days? Thanks for any info on that topic!! |
i very sincerely doubt u have to do anything in advance. I don't know about the tour, though.

Wow..that opening passage was a bit biased, wasn't it? |

The museum seems to think it is a good idea to get your tickets in advance. The tour seems to be a shockingly short 15 minutes!!

They have a 2.5 hour tour on some weekends for a premium price:

I would definitely get the tickets beforehand. Last time I went, I did.
Also, be prepared that you cannot take any pictures inside of the submarine (which IMO sucks!) |

I've seen her before and after the exhibit renovation. It's definitely something to see! The last time I was there a year or two ago I bought all my tickets the day I visited. So the U boat is extra but well worth it. As for a tour of the boat, it's guided and kinda short. I think the reason you can't take pictures inside the sub is so you don't slow down the tour. Also the Aft Torpedo Room, Conning Tower, and I believe the Bow Torpedo Room are inaccessible. But I still highly recommend seeing it.
