has anyone tested the sub sitting on the bottom?

what kind of damage if any do you get from sitting on the bottom?

Drifter 03-02-10 06:38 PM

Very good question. I would also like to know- especially on high time compression. :hmmm:

Webster 03-03-10 11:39 AM

has anyone tried this yet?

BlackSpot 03-03-10 12:13 PM

I've only scraped the bottom and the hull integrity went down to 99%

i also had a problem where it was on the bottom but in the external view there was a large gap between the sub and its shadow. it looked like it was a good 5m off the bottom. another bug....:shifty:

I would love to find this out as well since this has been an issue as long as i,ve been playing sincse sh-2

kylania 03-03-10 12:38 PM

Not entirely, but I was able to hover, standing still, 4m off the bottom without problem.

The bottom of the sea now has shapes instead of being just flat. Unfortunately, the devs got lazy and didnt test it properly (or just didn't care), the end result being that places where it looks like there's still 5m to the bottom there actually isn't. You can see what I mean, by finding a location with slopes and stuff and using the external camera to 'hug' the seabed while moving around.

Yes okay, when i saw this subject i thought more of the idea when you
are sitting on the bottom you are more difficult to track by destroyers.

I would like to know this two.

I actually tested this. I rammed the bottom at full speed and let myself scrape it for a while. Couldn't find the damage control screen but I never got a "WE'RE TAKING DAMAGE SIR" alert so I assume if I took any damage it was minor. Hitting rocks makes loud noises by the way, other wise its a pleasant thud.

Judging from previous versions sitting on the bottom will not make you 'invisible' to the destroyers, its jut a good way to end up dead.

Something tells me you won't be having troubles with the destroyers. Atleast not in the early days. I just went to blow up HMS Malaya in Scapa Flow, none of the 3-4 destroyers there even came to investigate the burning hulk of the Malaya.

Well there's historical precedent for that... The British didn't figure out that it was torpedoes that took out the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. The destroyers in the harbor didn't even look for U-47 until after the propeller of one of the German torpedoes was recovered from the wreckage the NEXT day by divers. Everyone thought it had been bombers.

Also keep in mind that up until this attack, the British were not aware that the Germans had developed electric torpedoes - this was the first attack of the war which used them.

That overconfidence may have been modeled into unit behavior at Scapa Flow for the early war period?

Although I'm also guessing that you weren't forced to make you way into the harbor by maneuvering around block ships in difficult tidal currents. ;)

Did the destroyers and torpedo nets at the main entrance take a holiday too?

someone wrote, you can hit the ground with full flank and it doesnt damage your boat at all...can anyone confirm this?
