Ubisoft drops DRM, but future games require Internet connection

Oh don't get too excited about the tittle, just read this article close as it is now called OSP or Online Service Platform instead of using DRM.

http://www.geek.com/articles/games/u...tion-20100127/

Seems like the first UBI PC game to go to the dogs will be Settlers 7 which is also in March 2010. May be behind arrival of SHV? Not sure but if so SHV may be Offline. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...ydl5rp51-1.gif

the campaign years can be modded.

DRM OSP MFU SOB or whatever initials it uses... Cant

hopefully this nonsense about DRM is not included in SHV

Reminds me of frozen dinner companies.

Sales are down due to a poor product.
What's the fix?
Change the packaging, of course.

John W. Hamm 01-27-10 07:40 PM

It say's they are dropping it, and the article was written today. But I still can't get out of my mind That they said in the German forums it would be in the Game. So just because they decided to drop it does not mean it will not be in SHV, SHV might just be the last to get it.

And according to what else they said.... They are switching to OSP!!! and with OSP it is not DRM but YOU MUST HAVE A CONSTANT ONLINE CONNECTION TO PLAY!

Like my mama always told me, "An item by any other name is still the same." What the article should have read was

UBI Dropping the Initial D.R.M. for it's security in preference to the newer more hip initials of O.S.P.

nothing has changed!

Why is Ubisoft forcing their loyal customers to sign up for a Ubisoft account when they don't want to give their private data and only play single player games?

We hope that customers will feel as we do, that signing up for an account will offer them exceptional gameplay and services that are not available otherwise.

What an absurd response... im sorry UBI your not really adding to my gaming experience here. I'm perfectly capable of managing my saved games.

Furthermore typically I install a game on one computer and use it there for an extended period of time. I dont move from machine to machine to machine.

The article says, in effect, they are going ahead with the DRM scheme that came to light yesterday, but it's not called DRM, it's called OSP.

In other words, they're not dropping it at all, you still need to have an internet connection the entire time you play.

Quote:

Ubisoft is dumping the use of DRM on future PC games. That’s good news taken on its own, but there is a replacement for that DRM in the form of the Ubisoft Online Service Platform (OSP). In essence it turns an Internet connection into a form of DRM by requiring one to play a game. Yes, ladies and gentleman, if you want to play a Ubisoft game you better hope you have a stable, always-on, connection to the Internet, otherwise you may as well go and read a book.

Requiring a connection is nothing new and Steam has built up a very healthy gamer base by providing games digitally for many years now. But it does have an offline mode so you can continue playing if no Internet connection is available. OSP has no such feature. If your connection goes down the game will pause and won’t be playable again until you reconnect.

...But when answering the question, “Is there an “off-line” option?” the answer is very telling:
No. The added services to the game (unlimited installs, online storage of saved games and the fact that you don’t need the game disc to play) require you to have an online connection while playing the game.

Nothing has changed.

GoldenRivet 01-27-10 07:56 PM

well.

sh*t

* * *
This is disqusting... We have new "great" services (unlimited installs, online storage of saved games and the fact that you don’t need the game disc to play) - sounds like cheap door to door seller... that wakes me up in the afternoon
:nope:

Except he ( article author ) says that UBI Setter 7 is said to be the first to get the axe, which also is suppose to come out march 2010. And as I said in my OP:

Can dream can't I? :D

this is correct, the same headline was used when it was first announced

they are calling it OSP instead of DRM but a duck is a duck is a duck no matter what name you call it.

all the storm on the forums is calling it DRM but this OSP as they call it is whats being talked about.

its still DRM just in another form so thats how its being called and not by the new name UBI wants to call it by.

Red Heat 01-27-10 08:07 PM

With DRM AND internet connections (to play) its the same...for me.
If this story continued...im not interested to buy this game or another game in this conditions!
I still enjoy to play SH3 GWX 3.0 very much! :salute:

The title is a bit confusing.
Ubisoft does not call this new system a DRM system, they have rejected their old DRM systems for this new one (one for all new Ubi games in 2010)

It is confirmed by German Ubisoft community managers that the following games are use this new system.

- Silent Hunter 5
- The Settlers 7
- Assassian Creed II PC
- Prince of Persia - The Forgotten Sands

They have confirmed it for the German releases, but I think it also applies to the international versions.

You can dream, but:
Quote:

The first game to require OSP is thought to be Settlers 7.
Note the "thought to be". Not "is". So go ahead and dream. Hope for the best. But prepare for the worst.

To the original author, please change the title of this thread. I came in thinking that the system was luckily rejected, as probably many more do.

Germany is within the EMEA group releases (Europe, Middle East and Asia). The US and Canada have their own territorial organization (and thus, a different release version... remember what happened with SH3 and the swasticas), so things may be different around there, but it's probably a matter of time that their managers announce the thing too.
