Too much smoke!

I decided to start trying some mods today. First off, the Generic Mod Enabler is AWESOME! I wish I had a tool like that when I was into Flight Sim.

Anyway, I've tried 2 so far and really like both of them; Real Environment, and NSM4 Classic (to make the ships sink a lot slower.)

After installing NSM4, I set up a tanker to shoot at to try it out. I really liked the slow, realistic-looking sinking. The stock sinking just looks silly it's so quick.

The only problem I have is that during the lengthy sinking, a huge column of smoke builds up a mile or so into the air. While it looks really cool, it drops my framerates into the single digits when I look at it.

I can't tell which addon is causing it, but I'd prefer to keep both of them anyway.

Does anybody know where there is some sort of config file that I can edit to limit the amount of smoke buildup?

Get Trigger Maru 1.9 with RSRD or you're just cheating yourself. Do it and do it now.

Downloading Trigger Maru 1.9 now. What is RSRD? A seperate addon?

I assume I just use the Generic Mod Enable to disable the other mods I have, then enable Trigger Maru 1.9.

I really like the look of Real Environment... hopefully TMO has a similar look.

The look of TMO is really breathtaking. Make sure you also get the patch. RSRD is a rework of the scripted campaign. There are several different versions of it, make sure you get the one made to work with TMO. Happy hunting!

Actually it truly is Generic. It works with any game, any time, anywhere.

RSRD is the Run Silent, Run Deep campaign. As said, there are different versions to work with different supermods, but for all one thing is the same: the convoy, task force and single ship movements have been restructured to reflect the way they really did it.

About the smoke, I don't know. I can only run SH4 with every single graphic option turned off.

Steiger 12-31-09 06:32 PM

With regards to the smoke, I think turning down the particle setting is what does the trick. Could be wrong though.

What patch? I didn't see that on the download page.

Thanks!

At the very bottom of the first post in the Trigger Maru thread, it says this:

You'll love TMO 1.9 and I wouldn't play without RSRD. Love fighting 50 ships convoys.

I use a lot of mods, but here is what you need. You probably know, but don't load NSM with TMO.

TriggerMaru_Overhaul_19
TMO19_Patch_081209
RSRDC_TMO_V502

TMO uses Env 5 tweaked a little. I notice little difference between it and Real Env. Some run Real Env with it, but I haven't studied it enough to know if it effects the sensors, ect.

The ONLY issue I have with TMO is the sinking mechanics. It retains the unrealistic quick-sinking mechanics of stock. I wish it would incorporate the sinking mechanics in RFB. If it did, I'd probably use TMO instead of RFB.

I removed all addons, then added TMO 1.9, and the patch. Now, when loading the game, I get the following errors holding up the startup:

file not found: data/menu/gui/UserGramophone2.dds
file not found: data/menu/gui/layout/OBSperiscope_mask_1024.tga
file not found: data/menu/Skins/American/Gui/nomograph.dds
file not found: data/menu/gui/layout/JM_TM_Compass.tga
file not found: data/menu/gui/layout/JM_TM_indicators.tga

Removed TMO and the patch... problem went away.

I can ALT+TAB to desktop and hit "OK" to get past them, then the game seems to load up normal. I haven't noticed any negative effects, but I don't really want to live with this problem, either.

I also noticed that many of the commands on the bottom left side of the screen are blank. I can still hover over them and it'll tell me what they do, and they still work when they click them, but I'd like to have the icons to help me find what I need.

Suggestions?

you got mod soup,

uninstall all your mods and one at a time move each mod out of jsgme to your desktop

this avoids moving the corrupted "hidden" backup files too if you try a "move all files" thing

when your done delete the "MODS" folder from your games main directory folder

run jsgme to create a new "MODS" folder and put all your mods back into jsgme and your done

(if you know what you are doing you can try selecting to show "hidden" files and delete the transparent backup files and the cfg file there)

jerm138 01-01-10 08:25 PM

Thanks Webster.

I tried all that... basically removed all add-ons one by one with JSGME. Then deleted the mods folder entirely, and removed JSGME.

Then I reinstalled JSGME, and re-unzipped TMO and the patch into the new MODS folder.

Used JSGME to add the mod and patch again, and had the same problem.

I must have dorked something up pretty good.:06: If I remove TMO, everything works just fine.

I'll just go back to the Real Environment addon with the generic RSRD campaign.

Am I missing out on anything really major by using Real Environment vice TMO?

Steiger 01-01-10 08:32 PM

I would say yes. TMO adds a lot of new ships and makes the game generally more realistic. After having played with TMO, I could never play without it. I don't know if you ever got GWX for SH3, but it's the same general principle.

seaniam81 01-03-10 01:28 AM

First question what version of SH4 you running. TMO 1.9 doesn't work with SH4 1.4 you need SH4 + UBM. otherwise known as SH4 1.5

If you do have this you best bet is to uninstall everything. Then delete any leftover files. Then do a reinstall of SH4, UBM, and then your mods.
