SH3 Commander Install

Hi Guys, if Install SH3 Commander while part way through a campaign, will I have to restart my campaign or is there no effect. Also there are a lot of mods out there, and sometimes its hard to know how old they are as some don't have a readme txt. I wondered if there was an up to date list for just GWX 3 compatible mods other than GWX's own mods, if you catch my drift;). Cheers.

Commander is not a mod but an external tool, so it doesn't have some of the problems inherent with installing mods. Some of its functions (like ship names) only take effect after the patrol is over. There may be a problem with functions that actually change game parameters. Personally I would go ahead and install it, but don't change anything until you end the patrol.

JScones will certainly see this thread and tell you absolutely what to do and not to do.

Any sound or graphics mods will be compatible with any supermod. Just be wary of anything that changes the AI sensors. It might be better if you use this thread to ask about any individual mods your are thinking of installing. I personally have a bunch of mods installed over GWX, with no problems, and Jimbuna, the GWX Chief Of the Boat, has a lot more than that.

Thanks Steve, I seem to run into problems when a mod wants to overwrite the menu settings file in the Data folder, I get a warning from JSGME when installing and it wants overwrite GWX menu settings file which seems to cause CTD when tring to use E.G. binos, this happened with Raptors Das Boot Interface. No major problem, I just back out the way I came in, even if I have to do it manually(dont be rude:har:) I always have back ups so again no major. I guess a bit of trial and error never hurt anyone.Cheers.

The major problems come with any mod that wants to overwrite the 1024 menu, camera dat, campaign, or the sensor files. Almost any mod which does not contain these files is OK.

Yeah cheers Irish, I have had to back up the truck so to speak a few times now, but have learnt to check all the files in the mod before installing or not as the case may be.

Here are a few that are definitely compatable:

You can also perform the painstakingly slow process of enabling each mod one at a time, then starting the game to see if there are any problems.

Something i'm currently doing as we speak. And I do mean painstakingly slow.:damn:

Commander does not install with JSGME. It installs directly to Program Files and creates its own icon on the desktop. After it is installed and you have used it to create a new career, you will always use it to start SH3. You don't have to do this, but it's best.

For testing, use a blank campaign file to speedup loading.
Of course, if there is a mixup in the campaign files you are screwed.

Yep thats what i'm using irish1958. Definitely cuts down the load times.

Still slow going though, as I have over 30 mods that i'm checking for corruption.

Nice post though, helps out any noobs that are trying to perform tests themselves.

Testing... the bane of my life.

At some point I'm going to follow VonDos and just play the game for a while and see what it's like.
