Many Thanks
Greetings and Salutations ,
I wish to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to one and all , who have transformed Silent Hunter 3 into one of the most captivating sim games I have had the enjoyment to play . I thank those who have made suggestions , to make the simulation as realistic as possible and those who have the talent to render these suggestions into reality as demonstrated via the numerous mods that are offered on this site . I regret not having this talent , I must admit that an electric can-opener still amazes me !!!! I do however have a suggestion for the upcoming SH5 , I would enjoy the sim if an automatic crew change would be installed as seen in SH4 , this would eliminate the need of baby-sitting the crew which is rather annoying in SH3 . Once again thank-you to one and all and looking forward to SH5 and the mods that may arise from this sim . We who are about to dive , salute you ! :salute: |

Quoted from the RealFleetBoat User Manual v1.52 "It reality, German u-boats had two watches: Port and Starboard. From 0800 to 2000 hours, the watches rotated every four hours. From 2000 to 0800 hours, the watch rotated every six hours." I think the stock watch system of the fleet boats is hard coded so that the above system cannot be used with u-boats in SH4. |
What were their duties while submerged?
play cards and await resurfacing? |
Not sure, to be honest.
Presumably they would have continued the watch rotations whilst submerged, but I have no idea what their duties would have been - perhaps general maintenance roles? Need someone more knowledgeable to answer this! |
Seeing as SH5 seems to be aiming much more for the first person experience I wonder if you as the commander will have fatigue and have to rest as well.. might be a bit odd having to get into your berth every so often! However, would nonetheless be realistic.

I know we argue against using Das Boot as any kind of reflection of reality, and rightfully so, but the idea of the bridge watch crew manning the planes and pumps while submerged only makes sense, as those were not manned while on the surface.
And remember, watch rotation applies to all crew members, not just the bridge lookout team. |

Speaking of the cook.
Would he not be a petty officer? |
Correct, he would not.
The 'smutje' was usually a MtrGfr or MtrOGfr. |
