[Request] Unified Installer

Now I realize that everyone comes from different walks of life, so all mods wouldnt be able to be included.. But, how about we try and create an installer of the core mods that are current. I personally remember that trying to install different mods was hell, so what I propose, is that we try and create an installer, which automatically installs the mods(and possibly some...material...:)) Into the proper files... I think it would make it easier for people to get more mods, easier. Now im not sure how to create an installer, or I would do it myself. Its just something for yall to ponder....

you mean invent something like the "generic mod installer" that has already been in use for years? :06:

Look here www.allaircraftarcade.com. At this site, exists what I am talking about. Through out the year, mods are released. So, instead of people downloading all the mods individually, one large pack is released, containing all of the mods, and automatically installs itself to the correct location. Saving time...and hair...noticed some of you are bald...

ahh, ok

hmmm, interesting idea but not everyone has a high speed internet for such a big download.

also with the large size of some of the downloads for sh3 and sh4 you could easily be looking at 4 or 5 gb size file pack for each game

Gunney 12-05-09 09:13 PM

But, what would need to be done, is to hyper compress the files, using WinRar. That would make things a tad quicker. It could also be hosted as a torrent, which would be quick when its first released...but would be slow a year after. But that would work for those who are generally active. Im just thinking aloud here, but I think it could be benificial, I know that Ill be gray by the time Im done modding my game, if I reinstall it.

what i said about 4 or 5 gb size IS if it was in a super high compressed form

Thats why Torrents work well....Ive downloaded 12GB programs, in an hour. And my internet is kinda crapy. Again, it was just an idea.

Never understand the obsessive need to reinvent the wheel.....JSGME works great, not to mention that not every mod is compatible with the others.

Gunney 12-07-09 07:23 PM

Problem is, your wheel is flat on one side.... Im not saying abandon JSGME. The installer, would just place all the files, in that particular folder, which is easier than having to track them all down, and do it yourself.

Meh, from what it sounds your plan would have me downloading a giant modpack that includes stuff I don't want to use. Forgive me but I don't waste HDD space on stuff I don't use, I don't download stuff I don't use. JSGME works fine.

sharkbit 12-08-09 02:23 PM

Same here-meh.
JSGME is a piece of cake. You pick the mods you want, download 'em, and move 'em over when you want to install them, move 'em back over when you don't want 'em, and delete 'em when they make you pull your hair out.
Doesn't get any easier than that. :sunny:

I tried the Unified Installer at AAA for IL-2:1946. All I got was corrupted downloads and frustration. :damn: Made me wish for JSGME version for IL-2. I uninstalled everything and deleted files, reloaded the game, patched it, and am playing it un-modded for now.
I may give UI a chance again in the distant future, but it is not worth the trouble now.

:)

And the problem with that is that every big mod, and a lot of the smaller ones, are being updated on a regular basis. Your super installer would have to be redone every month or two.

Here's an idea, and one I've pitched to people who demanded different mods over the years - why don't you figure out how to create that installer, and we'll see how it works. After all, everyone who has ever done a mod started off not knowing how.
