IX D2 or XVIII Walther?
After sinking 4 Large Convoy ships, 1 Aircraft Carrier (USS-Essex) & 1 Colorado Battleship at Midway i decided to call it a days play and started heading back to Batavia when i got there i was given the option to upgrade to the XVIII Walther Sub and i took it without second thought.
Now i wish i really didnt tbh. On my next mission i found out straight away some of the flaws of this Sub and im sure im not the first one to notice it but meh :O: The same trip ive done in my Ol'IX D2 (Batavia to west of Australia & patrol area for 48h) would leave me around about 65% - 75% Fuel but in the Walther i was very shocked to find that the same trip i was now down to 43% Fuel so i started heading back to Batavia ASAP. With the IX D2 i could do the mission and any extra stuff that was threw my way (well most of it :O:) and still be able to raid a Port like Fremantle of the west coast of Oz Land & make it back to Batavia with no sweat. The IX has even been to Cape Town in South Africa for a recon mission and back (That was a close one, I rolled into Batavia with 2% Fuel), The Walther would only be able to make it 3/4 the way there. Now i know that the Walther has. Pros: 6 Bow Torpedo Tubes 17 Extra Spaces for Reserve Torpedoes Radar has an Advanced Screen (Rotating Screen over Zig-Zag thing) H202 Walther Turbine ( 27knts on Surface i think and 20knts submerged. Cons: Dosent have as much Fire Power compaired to the IX (Flak Gun & Deck Gun) Fuel Consumption is alot more & the same speed as the IX What do you guys prefer? IX or XVIII? |
Type XVII - Tweeked!!!
Minutes aftrer trying the Type XVIII it was bye bye sub and hello Silent 3D Editor. After a 'few' adjustments ie 25Kts Surfaced and submerged and increased range I can now transit the Indian ocean without turning into a powerless tin tub. Set the torp loadout to TV's and am now the terror of those warp factor task forces that scream across the screen.
NB I first upgraded my subs because of the time, even at 4096 TC taken to get anywhere. Try it and have fun. |

I would assume that in real life being assigned to the Walther meant you would have been selected as more of a test pilot. It would have been fairly intriguing but not so practical.
More of a prototype than a real u-boat. |
Use a Type XXI
I agree that it's a bit silly tweaking the range of the Walther boats until they are usable in the far east. Try using a Type XXI instead. I've made a mod that enables early use of Type XXI (& XXIII) boats. It only works with Lurker's Operation Monsun (v720) mod. I haven't been able to get the "transfer" missions working yet, so if you want to play in the far east you will have to start over there. (Or, alternatively, start in Lorient and work your way around to Penang for the fun of it, then restart a career in Penang.)

I found that traveling at 'ahead slow' instead of 'ahead standard' in the Walther gives you comparable range to the IX. Ahead slow in the Walther is the same speed as 'ahead standard' in the IX.

I agree with previous post. The default speed for Ahead Standard for XVIII is like 15 knts but should be more like 9-10 knots. That is why you are burning so much fuel.
The XVIII is a "Fast Attack" submarine but travel speed should be about the same as other boats, 9-10 knts for best fuel economy. You can adjust this setting in the Data\Submarine\NNS_Uboat18\NSS_Uboat18.cfg file.:yeah: BTW, I just posted a TurmXVIII fix that makes the Schnorchel work.
