New Computer
 

Since I am now gainfully employed and being promoted to assistant manager(more money :D). I'm going to buy a new computer part by part. Mostly for SH5, and a couple other games here and there.

Here's what I'm thinking about:

Mind you I'll be re-using my logitech surround sound speakers, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and 130 gig hard drive from this computer.

And I'll be installing my Windows 7 Ultimate 32.

Well i can say at your taste is good,but in other hands ,the vid card amount 512 mb at least 1024 mb it`s better option and also use a high speed intel core (2) i7 "say" 3,8 ghz after people have some problem in 4 core,,,,but if u have a chance too do some good deal,great.....:)

1. GT 240 is rebranded a 9800GT, which is a rebranded 8800GT. I'd get something different.
2. I don't think i5 is triple-channel, i7 is though. I'll check it, but I think you should couple that CPU with either 2x1GB or 2x2GB.

Matter of preference, but I'd swap that drive for a Western Digital, and perhaps go with a Gigabyte board. :)

I'm actually thinking about getting a western digital because that is what I put into my ps3.

Any suggestions for Graphics card then?


I'm only going to get an i5 at the moment and then get an i7 later on, which is why I chose the intel board with its i5/i7 capabilities.

Also I'm salvaging my DVD/CDrW from this computer.

Not really, I'm not particularly happy with any offerings on the market at the moment. ATI seems to be the way to go no matter what you're looking for, and then I'd suggest getting a HD5000 for DX11 support.

HD 4770 costs about the same as 8800GT/9800GT/GT240, but is faster. If you want to stay in that pricing bracket, it's probably the best way to go.

GTX 260 & HD 4870 1GB perform very similar. HD 5770 is slightly slower but offers DX11 and low power consumption.

There's the slightly more expensive HD 4890, which is essentialy an overclocked 4870. Performance is on par with GTX 275, but that one is a little more expensive.



imho market is a mess at the moment, has been for a while. :-?

If you plan on keeping your system for more than a year, a 64 bit system with 4 gigs of RAM will be worth it.

Try to get a 1gb Vid card.

64 bit is the way to go.

Well laddies and gents. With college around the corner I've put my computer purchasing plans on the back burner to get a laptop instead(so I can play SH5 during lectures) :haha:.


Anyone have any suggestions for good laptops that can also play most games on medium/high settings?

I know whats a semi-good computer, but I have no clue about laptops. :oops:

To really see any gains from going 64 bit you have got to use at a minimum 8 GB and not 4 GB as commonly believed.
This is to offset the larger memory footprint 64 bit programs have (because of 64 bit instructions that is 8 bytes vs 4 bytes for 32 bit programs).

The only difference between the two is one has a 2.26 Core 2 duo and the other 1.6ghz Quad.

So far from what I've seen HP is a better buy than dell in terms of power and price. Haven't really looked at Sony Vaio yet.

If it's for gaming I'd say go for the dual-core. A lot of load get's put on a single core; 1.6GHz might be a bit light.

That said, games are becoming more efficiently multithreaded. :hmmm:

That Radeon should prove to be a bit faster as the 230M as well... I think. :)
Larger footprint yes, but not double. Shouldn't be, at least.

Okay, so the Dv7t is not only cheaper but better in performance.

What settings do you think games like L4D2, SH4, Empire Total War could be played at?

Ooooh, I don't know. I'm not a big fan of gaming on laptops. :-?

SH4 shouldn't be much of a problem, though it might slow down in harbors. Not a clue on L4D2, Empire maybe medium.

Just a guess really, I think you'd be better of asking someone who actually has experience with that chipset. :03:
