SimCity 4 & SimCity Societies
I kind of liked this genre of game for a while. I played SimCity 2000 Network Edition way back in 1997 when it came with a Compaq computer. Flash forward a few years and I got SimCity 3000 Ulimited. At the time I had a hard time choosing between SC3000 and Tropico. :88) Never did get Tropico.
I gave Tropico 3 a try and my computer couldn't take the heat. I've been thinking of the two games in the subject title because they are a part of the SimCity Box collection and my heap can run them. It comes with SC4 and its expansion Rush Hour. It comes with SCC and its expansion Destinations. It also includes Snap City and a trial version of Spore Creature Creator (not interested in Spore). Has anyone played these games? Are they any good? Are there any other SimCity type of games that you would recommend (minus Tropico 3 :dead:)? |
Sim City 4 and addon are pretty good imho. not perfect but pretty good.
societies is a piece of rubbish according to most SC fans |
hmm... Ive stuck with SS 3000... never played the new ones...
|
Recommend SC4+RH with some traffic mods.
Stock SC4+RH traffic just doesn't work according to your plans... :nope: |
Ack, you had to bring up SimCity? :(
Still mourning the recent murder of Maxis by EA (along with Pandemic and what little remained of Westwood). What made a ton of bucks for EA? The Sims. Who made it? Maxis (though EA even removed their name from the boxart and opening sequences :stare:). But nevermind... corporate BS. :nope: Yeah, SC4 is alright. Had fun playing, though I never got any expansions for it, so can't comment on that. * still, imho Societes is a no-no, simply because it wasn't developed by Maxis. As a result, it's just not a SimCity game as you know it. |

Ah, great fun and memories of SC4 + RH, I still have it installed somewhere. (even still play SC 2000 on my PSP)
But, WTH was up with SC4s poor performance? Regardless of your rig, it always lagged badly. |
Thanks guys. I probably wouldn't even be interested in SimCity Societies if it wasn't a part of the SimCity Box collection. Since it is included I would probably try it out anyway. I've been wanting to play this type of game again. I don't play games much anymore and thought if I did I might like to play a SimCity type of game. I'm not a fan of EA either, but there's not much of a choice for this genre.
While looking at this type of game I came across City Life World Edition (I learned CLWE does not come with Starforce like the original CL does.). I see there is also a City Life 2008 Edition. Has anyone ever played City Life? Is it any good? |

SC 3000 doesn't seem to run on XP. I got it for the wife but it would keep crashing.

I've never tried SC3000 on my current computer. When I got SC3000 I had an HP with Windows Me. It ran fine on that system. When SC4 came out that computer couldn't run it and I never thought to get it with my current WinXP machine.
I watched a couple videos on YouTube of City Life. It looks interesting, but I think I like the sound of SC4 better. I've been reading some reviews of SCS and it sounds pretty watered down compared to SC4. The reviews of SCS got better if you have the Destinations expansion installed, but it's still not as detailed as SC4. If I could find an SC4 Deluxe pack at the store I would probably get that instead of the SimCity Box collection. I haven't seen SC4 Deluxe in a long time. My biggest concern is, do these games have installation limits like some other EA games? Does anyone know what DRM is used with these games? |
Nothing more than a disk-check I imagine, but I'll see if there is more details to be found. :hmmm:
edit: Simcity 4 Deluxe has SafeDisc 2: nothing more than a disk-check. ;) City Life has StarForce 3.7: that would be a no-no. :nope: |
Sim City 4000 was pretty good, but it wasnt step forward from SC3000 if you ask me. :hmmm: (but it was still gooooood)
SCS on another hand, was a try to get something between Sims & SC and so they dusted their copies of Pharaoh and Caesar and decided that nobody would remember those anymore and just copy the idea into their game. Fortunately, people remembered the two games and that they were actually pretty darn good when they were released (and still are). And not to mention Tropico which had the same basic idea, but again they did it better. So, in the end, I think it is sufficient to say that SCS is a fine example of a game that fails in every single area it tries to be good in. :yep: |
I can live with SafeDisc. :) I read City Life uses StarForce, but CL World Edition doesn't. I'm not sure about CL 2008 Edition, though. I think I'll steer clear of it though, just in case.
SC4 is the one I am actually after. Since SCS is a part of the collection, I would probably try it. I watched a video of Sim Carnival: Snap City. That is apart of the box collection also. Snap City looks really dorky. It's like a cross of SimCity and Tetris. |
