Explosion in space

Did any of our members who live in the Western portion of the United States witness the 0.5-1.0 Kiloton equivalent explosion in near space?

This last link has a cooleo video that looks like something out of Hollywood

Some scientists are saying this is not related to the Leonid meteor shower.

According to the article it lit up the sky pretty good.

I live in Utah, but I was sound asleep at midnight.

So, no, I didn't even hear about it until reading this thread.

Wow. When streetlight sensors switch the lights off, you can bet it was bright enough to count as daylight.

Wow, that was a bright flash. I've once witnessed a rather large bolide but nothing of that magnitude.

Now that was cool. Thanks for the links Platapus.

Watch the video clip again and watch for the shadows being cast when the explosion reaches it's brightest level. When you see that it really gives you an idea of the brightness.

"A straggler from the Leonids" wow I'd hate to see a non straggler.

When I saw that last clip, my first thought was of Bert the Turtle.

Duck and Cover!

Watching that video you could be forgiven for thinking that Earth was under attack :o
