I saw quite a lot of pretty hard horrormovies as a little kid, I was always eaves dropping when the television announcer said that the next movie is not recommended for kids. Some of them frightened me but I don't necessarily consider them great films today. I remember Psycho 2 being pretty scary and also Wickerman which was recently stupidly remade with Nicholas Cage.

Exorcist 1 is still a nice interesting film to look at. I also like Alien 1 and Jaws 1. I even read Peter Benchleys book, not as good as the film.

The Shining was recently voted as no. 1 most scary horror film in some vote and it's ok I guess although I mostly don't like supernatural stuff.

These only count when you saw them the first time, I have no idea if they are scary now.

Alien
The Howling
The Exorcist

The original "A Nightmare On Elm Street" scared the *expletive* out of me when I first saw it. Before they made him a stupid comedy character who had to get a one liner in every time he killed someone, Fred Kreuger was SCARRY as hell ! I had nightmares for weeks after seeing that movie. That first movie really did it right. Even the seccond one, while nowhere NEAR as good as the first one did it right.
