Promotion and Medal presentation SH 5

wouldnt it be great ( captains only ) if there was some kind of short film footage toward ones achievments, lets say 5 second clip of donitz presenting promotions/ lower medals. perhaps adolf on earning knights cross? even if this were in some kind of annimation!! iam sure it beats looking at a medal with words of praise, to be suddenly put in box. after all the love of the game!! sim, inspiration certainly helps during those long patrols, the looking foward to returning to base. Medals/ stripes/ Fraus/ beer/ and gossip with thomsen leaves one of satisfaction. you think??

Yes, this would be neat. I never earned any medals or promotions in Aces Of The Deep, but its companion game Red Baron gave film clips of medals being pinned on. Both of those had newspaper clippings celebrating your accomplishments and mourning your loss if you died.

Donitz or others, yes. Hitler, No.

Agreed, imagine what would think those who already say: ''why german side again''?

One thing I had always imagined was that instead of a 'medal box', there be a screen that shows a tunic, with your rank and insignia added as you earn them. Something that can be zoomed in or rotated, and hovering the cursor over a particular award will show a description...

Maybe even have the option to show (some) of the awards as ribbon bars instead of badges.

Kinda hard to explain exactly, but it would show your progression in a different way I think, rather than a wooden box with cut-outs waiting to be filled in. Oh, and the accompanying documents would be a nice addition to the award also.

I'm also wondering how the criteria for awards will be done this time out. It seems they are always 'flaky' in these games.

nice one guys , some good ideas there, i do so hope the dev team develop one of these ideas, as for playing the other side with my above mentioned idea we all know its for the u boot, but i get the drift, nothing meant by it just saw prien being highly awarded with the higherarchy on his merrits, they even sent prien and his crew in an all expenses paid ski trip not to mention all the other perks one had thrown at them. :salute:

Hey no biggie on what you mentioned, it's just that flying us off to the Berghof might be a bit much..lol

No worries tho.

Hope they do have a better visual / criteria model for the medals this time tho!

I agree. I remember Panzer Commander had a static screen. Nothing extravagant, but better than nothing.

I agree. I actually built a prototype of this in SH3Cmdr, where when the user selects the Crew Manager screen they get a bust of each crewmen with rank/medals/badges/quals mounted. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an artist with free time to help finish it. :(

Again, another feature that fell by the wayside in SH3Cmdr through lack of help, but one that I'd love to see in SH5.

Somekind of drawn pic would be nice, kinda like the screens you see in SH4 for stuff. I dont mind having uncle Adolf presenting awards, maybe draw it so that Adolf is facing away from the "camera", so you dont see his face, but you still know who the man is. Maybe draw him from back and right, so he is standing in an small angle, so that the swastika on the left sleeve wouldnt be visible (but you'd see abit of his left arm and part of the red banner) and only a portion of his face would be visible. I think everyone would be happy with that. :hmmm:

Anytime I think of a supreme graphical representation of receiving awards/promotions, Red Baron and Red Baron 3D always come to mind. Sadly, there's a shortage of that kind of quality in games today. Or hard work for that matter. It's always left up to the modders now. Devs like Damon Slye and Dynamix were praised and loved for one reason: they produced damn fine work.

I've gotta say, this thread has reminded me of everything I loved about Microprose simulations of the 1980's and early 1990's. They always had medal screens and stuff. Remember Gunship 2000?
