Great Weekend!
My Wife and I, accompanied by my 7 year old niece and 13 year old brother in law attended the 25th annual Reklaw Fly-in-Camp out in Reklaw, Texas.
We located an appropriate spot in the pasture of the Flying M Ranch and pitched our tent to stay for a few days. Here are some photos of the more than 500 aircraft that flew in for the camp out. Enjoy! http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7272515_n.jpg 1940 Waco Bi-Plane http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5404039_n.jpg Well Restored and cared for by a husband and wife team. http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3441715_n.jpg lots of Piper J3 Cubs always show up for the festivities. http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5553861_n.jpg http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._2529802_n.jpg Classic Panel... The fuel tank can be seen underneath the panel forward of the stick. The little stim (barely visible by sunlight) extending vertically from the top of the panel is the fuel guage (it floats on the fuel, so the stem gets shorter and shorter as you run lower on fuel) http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._1547153_n.jpg Antanov AN-2 http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3220491_n.jpg Me taking a break in some cool shade with a cold beer. http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7041796_n.jpg Northwest parking... by sunset the field had only about 10 parking spaces remaining. http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._1307368_n.jpg The runway... lined on left and right by rows of campers and spectators. http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._6301835_n.jpg some interesting cowl plugs! http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._4474643_n.jpg Well cared for L-19 http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5392635_n.jpg Highly Polished Cessna 195 http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._6542495_n.jpg The Vans RV that wished it were a P-51 Mustang http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5452595_n.jpg a Wilga taxis past for takeoff. |

Going to get my tailhweel endorsement soon, and im looking to buy an L4 soon afterward. |
Why the L-4? Availability? or cost?
I wished I had stuck with my flying, but having moved near Washington, DC, I did not find flying as fun as it was in the Midwest. That's what sucks about life When I was young I had the time and the location for great flying but little money Now that I am old, I have the money but not the time nor the location for fun flying :damn: It just ain't fair. :D But when I move out of DC to someplace nicer........ |
I like the L4 because of its warbird status and the fact that many of the L4s have service records that put them in places like France and Belgium and Germany etc.
Its probably the lowest cost "warbird" on the market and the kids seem to love them. Im not 100% settled on the L4 I would love to get a straight J3 with a 160 horse Lycoming on it maybe a belly pod to boot. my wife and I love attending air shows and fly ins/camp outs... and we would love to get either an old Stearman or J3/L4 or something similar. Problem with the stearman is maintenance and cost of acquisition. But i could put around at 90 kts in a J3 all day long - its flying at its most pure IMHO. Just the basic minimum required instruments for VFR and a thirst for adventure. |
Nice pics! Looks like the weather was terrific, too
I especially love the Cessna 195. Great engine sound. |
Cool! That An-2 picture brings back memories when I used to skydive. I have lots of jupms on that plane.
|
Lots of awsome vintage aircraft there... thanks for sharing.

Nothing beats the smell of Av-gas in the morning!
