Full Combat Manual
New to Dangerous Waters, however I did play 688I years ago. I no longer have that game and I hate online manuals. Does anyone know if this Full Combat Manual is still available to purchase? I cant seem to get an answer/email returned from any staff. I would hate to paypal an order only to have to fight to get my money back. I am sure some of you know what I mean.

Unfortunatly while the game manual is great when it comes to explaining what the various buttons and stations do it isn't that useful in regard to how to employ the stations in a useful way.
In other words ... game manual = buttonology, community created manuals = tactics. However, nobody stos you from downloading and printing the community manuals. |
Thank you both for your replies, I have done both. Ordered the manual and have found a lot of downloads that should prove helpful in getting me up to speed quicker.
Cheers!:salute: |
If you still have your old 688 H/K manual, have another look at it. It really explains some things better than the hefty 580-page DW manual. Also, subs are pretty much unchanged (except for button layout), so it's mainly the flyables and of course the FFG where the DW manual comes in handy.
|
Yeah. The 688i Hunterkiller book even had a tutorial in it that took you through pretty much everything in a really nice way. I think it does a better job of teaching tactics than the DW manual too.

IMO the DW Manual is for one kind of person only.
The pure newbie with an huge amount of time to spend in a lost cause. If you play the MODS, of course, the manual is likely to teach you wrong tells. The manual will tell you nothing about tactics, just how to use the stations at a very basic level (and it's 500+ pages!) |
Sub Tactics Manual
There is no substitiute for MP sub combat in a virtual fleet. (Eh Nexus7 ?) We had to work hard
for the following training document, supplied previously on completion of an advanced course in the Sea Wolves, and compiled by an active serving officer. See - The RedBook in SUB_DOCS at The Sea Shadows Naval Academy - http://seashadows.org/Academy/download.html In case of future difficulty and as a matter of courtesy you may wish to contact Cmdr Apollo at apollo@seashadows.org |

Most things can be learned, given a not ever changing subject of study... Anyway, awesome to see you around, Bellman ! |
Well,
I think both the official manual and the community manuals serve their purposes. From the official manual you can learn what each button and station does and the very basics of using the sonar and tma. Since you usually learn only one platform at a time you don't have to read all 500+ pages at one setting but instead focus on those parts that you need atm. Once you know what every knob and button does (from your choosen platform) you can advance to the relevant community manuals to learn when and why to use those knobs and buttons. Obviously you can always revisit the original manual when you are unsure what a button does or for example how to fire a torpedo. Using this approach works well IMHO, besides it lessens the workload for those who contribute to the community by providing said manuals and tutorials. Instead of explaining at length the buttonology of every station they can jump right into everything the original manual left out (tactics for starters) and reference any knobology questions to the original manual. |

Been reading it at work (when my boss is not watching), over the past few days. Really great stuff, section regarding zig TMA is a must. |
G:- OS has posted at CADC in 'Files and links' - Files Repository - DW-Manuals - Red Book. :know:
|
In regard to posting stuff like those manuals somewhere "accessible" ... as I mentioned earlier and on other posts ... the CADC has had a file repository for some time now and even better since about 2 months or so Ive switched to another hosting plan with a lot more webspace and more or less unlimited bandwidth. All thats left is that the community contributes and simply uploads whatever is available. After the upload all you have to do is notify me so I can set the status of the uploaded file(s) to active/approved and everybody can start downloading.
The only limiting factor right now at the CADC is that you have to be registered to upload and download anything. Reason for that (Registering/approving) is simple, without that there is a serious risk for leechers, bots and in general people with bad intentions to take advantage of the CADC for other purposes and I simply dont want that. However I don't consider those big obstacles as you only have to register once and in turn you can access all features on the CADC website and as for getting approval, just send me a PM and the file should be online within 24hrs, most of the time less because I check the website usually twice or more daily. Again the reminder ... the CADC was intended to be a community driven website ... I can do only so much alone. |
New link to Red Book?
The link to the red book in this thread ...
http://seashadows.org/Academy/download.html ...is broken. Does anyone have an updated link? Thanks. |
