Periscope? I dont need no Periscope!

I have noticed lately that more and more I do all my attacks from the Attack map. So much so now that I never use the tools in the parascope view.
So I was curious about parascope view mods that give you control over your torpedo station such as OLC's. Do you recommend them?

Yes

Without the periscope, how are you calculating range to target?

If you have plotted the target's course very exactly, and they don't zig-zag, then maybe you do not require the periscope. But, I still often take a look, just to verify my calculated AOB/range are approximately correct.

If you aren't calculating range and AOB yourself, but using the magic map target icons, well, you should try turning that off and calculating the range yourself :)

My only wish, is that the attack map had more levels of zoom (out) and some actual plotting tools (compass, protractor, ruler)! You can not plot an attack on the attack map. You have to do it on the navigation map, then switch to attack map to input the data to the TDC.

Of course these tools are rarely needed for navigation...

Actually My targeting is full real, No helper. And I guess if I am at PS depth I do use it to put the ships on the map so that I can program the TDC and fire it from that view.

When you have no map contacts you really need the periscope tools.
I do use OLC gold for it.

I'm not sure I understand how using the periscope to put the target on the map so you can measure it qualifies as "full real". In real life the captain had to focus the periscope so the range could be read, then it had to be drawn on the map, allowing for the possibility of mistakes.

I could be missing something, of course.

Practice makes perfect.

Thats why I always get to within 1,000 yards and average about 400, it limits the mistakes. Its as if my first officer is feeding me the info as me and the weapons officer adjust the TDC and let loose.

If you play GWX and want to kick old habits, I heartily recommend ACM. It removes the attack map entirely (you get a very pretty TDC instead) but I find it even more convenient otherwise.
