Identifying hydrophone sounds
 
had a quick question about the HYDROPHONE . I read a thread once about identifying a type of ship buy the sound it makes as herd through the hydrophone . I can't find this thread . The sounds I herd was like alot of chirping birds . I herd it on a manual scan but my hydrophone man couldn't pick it up . So I'm guessing it was between 18km to 30kms away . It also appeared to be moving fast . My location was AF 77 . Any help in identifying this contact would be appreciated ... thanx :up:

Whales can be heard through the hydrophone in GWX - I think dolphins too. Maybe that was what you heard?

Or maybe just a really, rusty, squeaky ship.:ping:

I had never really herd that before ( like a bunch of birds ) ... it was spread out over say 20 degrees or so and loud and moving fast . I made a run for it and it went from 0 degrees Bering to 270 degrees Bering in about 2 minutes . As mentioned above my hydro-man never detected it . So i though it was 18kms or farther . Never saw anything in the scope either . I gave up on it and it disappeared rather quickly . Dolphins ? hummmmmmmmm

Very basically- fast rhythms are usually Warships, slow ones are usually Merchants. Exceptions: Battle Ships, Q-Ships, Armed Merchant Cruisers, and Fleet-Carriers can also be slow.

Some mods can change the sounds for passive sonar, but as far as I know, for whatever mod you use, every ship has its own unique sound. FWIW, I make a point of trying to listen to every identified ship I encounter.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but along these lines...is it possible to determine speed by counting revs per minute with SH3's hydrophone? I read that this was possible with real ones, thought it would be neat to try. Of course, you need to know how many blades the screws have for any given ship, but, for the truly hardcore...

Also, are the slow screws of BB's and carriers the reason they can sometimes be misidentified as merchants?

You definitely heard dolphins. There are more than just sounds of them, if you get close enough, you can see them through the periscope. I think estimating speed by counting propeller RPM doesn't give good results in stock but there are mods that should make it possible. I'd like to try it as if you have speed and bearing over enough period of time, you can calculate everything you need for a torpedo solution without ever sticking your periscope out of the water - no fancy active sonar required.

Seriously......it was probably the ambient sea life if you were nowhere near any whales or dolphins.

It was possible with a mod for an old version of GWX. But then only roughly. Different types of ships had to share the same sound file. So you had to keep your options open and deduce based on target motion.

IIRC there was someone that made a sound mod recently(1 or 2 months or so), and I think he also tried to tackle this kind of thing. But if he succeeded I can't remember. You might want to search the forum for recent sound mods.

Pretty sure you herd the dolphins. I heard the same thing in the English Channel last night. Welcome change from patrols. Same tracking befavior too 20 degree spread then moving fast (of course they could be swimming round the boat) . Its fairly ralistic of sh to sim the sounds without necessarily being able to spot them. When Ive seen dolphins from my real boat in Puget Sound sometimes the only pop up very briefly other times they are practically swiming on the surface.

Explaining mysterious sounds
 
Hello there I simply wanted to explain the mysterious sounds you heard.


It's the sound signatures of Dolphins near the surface,at least 3 of them.Think of it as them having a conversation with each other.



Feel free to ask any questions regarding any other mystery sounds and advice or general help as far as Silent Hunter games are concerned.
