A funny thing happened on the way to Freetown
Hi there. I encountered a small convoy off Freetown. 3 merchants and a Tribal destroyer. The destroyer came for me, so I popped a torpedo down its throat. It did not sink. It went up to 28 knots and headed back to the head of the convoy. It must have been scared. I followed the convoy at night, surfacing every know and then to use the deck at 7m depth. I sank a C3 with only a few shots. I was amazed. The destroyer stayed at the front of the convoy. I sank all 3 merchants with the deck gun, then sank the destroyer with a torp. It was so easy.

If ever you damage a DD up to a certain degree it stops doing the sub hunting stuff but tries to work on the scripted task. Single DDs retreat and try to "escape", escorts move into "their position" and stay with the convoy. They never engage again in sub hunting but start to shoot you when in weapons range on the surface. Sometimes you'll find burning DDs in a convoy hit by the U-boats spawned in the convoy. They shoot but do no sub hunting.
