A funny thing happened on the way to ....
Heading back to the new port we took in the Solomon Islands (can't remember the name)...
After exhausting all my torps 2 nights ago and sinking 3 freighters of that large convoy, I am heading to the Solomons to refit/refuel. In the morning I see (on radar) 2 fast ships moving in my direction. I'm curious, so I change course to intercept at a better angle, and see they are liners of some kind. At first I thought, "you can't shoot passenger ships", so I saved the game and decided to try DECK GUNS on them (as I have no torps). I didn't think I could sink something so big as that with deck guns only. But after about 15 minutes and over 60 rounds of HE shells, it actually went down!! I was hitting it high in the stacks. Turned out to be a "RARE" class Troop Transport at over 18,000 tons alone! The other troop transport had tried to run (circled below in both pics) but I eventually caught up and exhausted all my remaining rounds on him too! And he went down as well, though not as many tons. WHAT A GREAT FIND! OPTIMISM http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...alAura/sub.jpg RARE CLASS TROOP TRANSPORT (18,000 TONS +) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...lAura/rare.jpg SHE'S GOIN' DOWN, SIR! http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...ra/deckgun.jpg |
Oh Pshhhhhhh! i dont belive some aspects of that. How could you find a rare troop transport WITH NO ESCORT! the one time i saw one it was wrapped in an escort screen of Light cruiser a few heavy cruisers EVEN A FREAKING BB I SAW!!!! a kongo. there were two of these and 20 escorts. 10 of em were Dd 3 LC 6 HC and that 1 BB. i decided to go in!!!! i fired 3 torps at one liner one impacting in bow one in midle and the last in the stern. it sunk it. and the dd went on alert like crazy. i sunk 8 and it took me 14 torpedoes. i had ionly 7 torps 4 in front and 3 in stern. so i go ahead and use the stern and sink the other liner, and i fire my last 4 at 2 takao heavy cruisers which are 10,000 tons a piece and they both sunk. one took 10 minutes of gameplay though. so i dive REAL deep and sail off leaving this major convoy now a burnt up task force target for another submarine(if there WAS another :( )

there in there... just gotta look for them.
|
not sure, but i think you can do it with a lot less than 60 rounds...
|
If you're playing TMO, but you can sink those with 30 shots or so. TMO has damaged zones different than stock, so you want to spread some shots from bow to stern, but yes, mostly concentrate on the engine room, just try and place most shots below the waterline.
Those are fun to shoot, I ran into a group of 3 last night with 4 escorts. |
seriously though.... not one escort around. They were speeding through the fog alone!
|
That happens alot in stock. Frankly, I haven't seen one in a long time playing RSRD. I guess they still exist.... Did you see 50 lifeboats. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't, guess if you do they're loaded with troops.

Queen Mary and Queen E are both known to have run solo. Not many naval vessels could keep up with them anyway at 28 kts cruise speed over long distances.
