Great board strategy game: ABALONE
Quote:
If you don't know it, you can find an explanation of Abalone at wikipedia - you will be surprised how easy yet elegant the rules are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abalone_(board_game) And now the best part of this post: I now found a computer program for it, which is said to be one of the strongest for Abalone there is. In fact it is the toughest I have played against so far, and I know two freeware and one payware programs. But my assessement does not mean much, since I am really a beginner. The name of the program is Aba-Pro, and it is winner of the 8th ICGA Computer Olympiad 2003. It was developed as part of a diploma thesis at the university of Graz, Austria. AND IT IS FREE! http://www.ist.tugraz.at/staff/aichh...ch/rp/abalone/ Download link, articles on the matter, and player's tributes and comments to be found on that site, or go the easy way here: ABA-PRO 4.8 Get it. If you like good quality board strategy games like Chess, Othello, Backgammon, Checkers and the like, ABALONE is for you. I played two matches with the software, and it functions both with pushing Sumitos and parallel moves. Many webengines there are do not allow the latter. The basic setup position in the software is Belgian Daisies, avoiding the problem with the original default positions allowing eternal defense. Belgian Daisies seems to have become pretty much an international standard at tournaments. Highly recommended! A publication with some theory behind the program ( "Playing makes fun. Algorithms make fun. Playing with algorithms is fun squared." ) An article about the ICGA tournament Some statements of top players Quote:

Abalone is a very fun game.
As the game dealer described it: It is a combination between Chinese Checkers and Sumo Wrestling. And you know what? He was right. :yeah: |
Good place to start when searching support regarding theory and tactics.

Zombie Alaaaaarm! :D
It still is a great game that appeals to both aesthetics and intellect, all that with elegant, simple rules. This link here is the final of the 2015 world championship match. Even if you do not know the rules and have no idea what it is about, you may see that it simply looks elegant and pleasant to the eye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jFWsGRVZdc And I just saw that a quite good Android version that I know since two years, meanwhile has made it to POC as well, on Steam. I do not know the PC version, but on Android 4.4.2 it runs smooth and stable for me. The official trailer showcasing it a bit: http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/st...m?t=1447361456 Note that the crowd complains noisily about trading cards and achievements not working, but I do not care for such stuff, I stricly see this from a game-players POV. If the PC verison runs stable and is like the Android verison, then i recommend it, it's better than the commercial Abalone game there was several years before. Personally, although I love the game, I suck at it. Play it too rarely, did not dove into it deep enough. But I realise the value there is, and that is what I appreciate. Big strategy with few, simple rules - that is what genius is about: to have something complex but let it appear as something simple, easy, and in this case also: elegant. With 5 Euros on Steam, the risk is limited. |
