Declaration of War?

I am running GWX with a few of the auxiliary mods. (Cap A's icons, enhanced damage, etc) My start date is 01AUG09, but when I sink ships, they count as Neutral, and I am penalized. I'm only sinking ships with the British flag, (although several other countries use the same flag in GWX) and so I am forced to conclude that the war hasn't really started yet.

Can anyone tell me when the war does, in fact, start? Should I just start in 1940? Or just sail around a bit collecting qualifications, and the occasional medal?

The Second World War started on September 1st, 1939. The 70th anniversary is two days away.

Right, and it is August, so that means I should be able to start shooting, right? September comes before ....

Right. Now I feel dumb. I even looked that up, and still got it wrong.

Thanks. Now, let us never speak of this post again.

Sept 1 for Poland; Sept 4 for Britten, and a bit later for most of the Commonwealth nations.

:)

the august start is so you can set sail during peacetime and receive radio messages that the war has started!

it's a GWX feature and I think it's lovely

let's keep this post going for a while because I found it amusing as well as educational (I never stopped to think that it's exactly 70 years ago, amazing)

Due to the hard-coded design of SH3, patrols can only start on the 1st of any month. So a patrol to get into a prewar position to before hostilities commence has to start on August 1st. An unfortunate coincidence as it means one month of basically marking time although your crew gains some experience.

Yes...70 years ago it all started. Were almost as far away in time from the Second World War as that event was from the American Civil War.(80 years)

Hello

One time i choose to start in August 1939, instead of Setember 1939, to enjoy the views, relax, and enjoy the peace time. I left Kiel base and i use the Kiel canal to ritch North Sea and Mancha channel to go to the Atlantic...i was in the half channel, listen some music in the gramophone and for any reason i go to the sh3 map...and i so the English Cities changed to red lol...and me in the middle of the channel when the W.W. II started...my face changed to all colours possible...but i was able to aproach the French coast as possible and sail away with out notice! :D:haha: :har:

Before the war starts, I visit British pubs and French bistros in der Kanal. After that it's deep waters , baby. :DL

...And just think how much has changed between these dates... The civil war was fought with canon, horse and muzzle-loaders, WWII was the great war of technology, and now our aircraft are piloted by a kid with a PS3 joystick a hundred miles away...

Cheers to all the men & women, military & civilan, on all sides, who served their countries in WWII

Sept 3rd 11:00, actually - for the British. In the afternoon for the French, I believe. In the game you are cleared to start attacking in the morning, with quite a lot of restrictions, as it turns out.

JgzMan, an important aid in this is the F1 menu, ''Enemies of Germany''. It doesn't pay to sink any ship at any time unless you're sure they're fair game.

JHuschke 08-31-09 02:57 AM

Yes the war started quite long ago, but I still have the dreams of seeing infantry men firing upon each other and the Luftwaffe comes after the enemy on retreat...

Although, most World War II games that have been made are not totally historically correct. Silent Hunter III, has a high level of being historically correct, probably higher than any other game I assume. I've learned alot from games and of course SUBSIM and its Captains!

Not quite correct.

Commonwealth countries that had adopted the Statute of Westminster had the power to choose their own declaration dates; countries that had not, ie Australia and NZ, plus other Commonwealth countries/dominions such as India, were effectively at war the moment Britain declared on 3 Sept (regardless of any stirring Prime Minister's speeches).

Yeah isn't peace time a great thing? especially when you 're cruising surfaced through Dover canal, and have a cup of tea with the captain of a British DD?
:D
