Help PLEASE!!!!

Okay , I am still having problems with GWX3 crashing to desktop or crashing to a black screen. I seem to have tried numerous help topics on the forum but with no success. the only thing i have diffrent is an upgraded soundcard and graphics card to when I last ran GWX2.5 and that ran ok. I have performed numerous clean installs deleted all registry files. Latest crashes have been when I am in freeview watching shipping I have torpedoed, but this is by no means exclusive on some occasions it just crashes. Graphics card is nvidea geforce 6800gs, soundcard is a hercules gamesurround fortissimo 2. Can anyone suggest settings for these devices could help as these are the only difference I have upgraded from 2.5. Thanks.

SH3 and older nVidia cards do not play well together in the first place. A common problem you'll find is the "nVidia particle bug".

Use the minus "-" and equals "=" keys, next to the Backspace key, to adjust settings for in-game anti-aliasing while playing the game to smooth out the frame rates.

Also, make sure you do not set your Particle Density to more than 60, under the Video Settings in the Options menu.

You'll know if it's the particle settings because nearly all effects, like explosions, bow spray, bullets whizzing about, even the bubble trails of torpedoes are done with particles. Do you notice if the game lags and stutters a lot when a ship explodes as its sinking, right before the game crashes? That's definitely an issue with particles.

In the video card's control center software, make sure you set anti-aliasing ( AA ) to no higher than 4x. Anisotropic filtering should also be no higher than 4x. Setting both to 2x probably would be better, or even turned off completely.

For other settings, if you have them, set them to no more than "performance" or "quality", but "performance" is recommended if you must have them activated.

If none of those work, it might be a case of your vid card and sound card conflicting with each other, even if there is no conflict displayed in the Windows Device Manager. It's usually caused by both cards trying to use the same memory address, but it happens at irregular intervals. Do you notice similar lockups with games or software other than SH3?

Some nVidia drivers work better than others with older games. Have a look in the nVidia forums and Guru 3D (these guys are to vid cards what Subsim is to SH3! www.guru3D.com).

One last thing is to make sure your motherboard's chipset drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes this will fix issues with IRQ's and compatibility with certain peripheral cards.

I hope I may have managed to shine a light on something that has not already been done to death in the other threads you've been to in your search for help.

Let us know and good luck!

Sometimes the problem is overheating. You also might want to check temperatures. One such program is SpeedFan: (http://almico.com/speedfan.php), but there are many others also.

Hi tried your suggestion Graf paper, all seemed well, but just as torpedo was going to hit ship..... CTD aarghh:damn:. This also happened after I restarted and was patrolling this time a different CTD just went to black screen and then went to desktop. Other software works fine with video card I know a little extra RAM May help but would it solve the problem? Irish1958 thanks for suggestion but temp is fine.

Had same issue with my old rig.

Jimbuna and Danlisa figured it out for me.

Bad ram stick. Had 4 1gig sticks. Tested by trial and error.

Found 1 bad stick. Left it out and GWX ran purrrfect. :DL
