Start of war patrol Grid
Running GWX 2.1, Just killed another career yesterday. Stop attacking convoys in shallow waters:nope:.
Anyway so im starting a new one, first flotilla, Type IIA, I am requesting advice for a good patrol grid to be in at the start of the war. In previous careers Ive tried the english channel and the Irish sea, at the outbreak of war. Both only had light traffic of coastal freighters and such. I only have 5 torps so im looking for the best possible tonnage. However, I will not refuse to sink any enemy vessel that crosses my periscope. I was thinking of heading down to the mouth of Gibraltar, yes I have the time and fuel to get there. Where do you guys position yourself at the start of the war? I would like to have similar sucess as the sinking of the courageous:yeah: Type IIA captain seeking good tonnage before I switch to the VII. |
Well, I would say try off the east coast of Britain (before they put mines there). I've always had success there when starting new careers in '39 (im guessing your starting in 1939).
Also if your feeling brave, you could always take a trip into Scapa Flow, and sink some RN ships:arrgh!:. |
I've had sucess patroling the 'choke points'. Wait on the western side of Scappa and you will eventulaly find some big ones comeing in or out. Convoys and shipping in the sounthern approaches.

Update:
Well, my idea worked like a charm. U-2 sailed out of kiel on August 1st and reached the mouth of Gilbraltar around august 27th. Costing almost half the fuel supply. Anticipating war the crew rested and conducted drills and manuevers untill sep 3. U2 got the first kill of the war sinking a British Granvielle Type freighter, beating the sinking of the Athena by less than a half Hour. U2 sank another British merchant, a passanger Cargo on the 6th of sept. On the 7th U2 scored it biggest victory of her patrol, spotted 2 french merchants travelling together. Sank both a Large Merchant and a medium cargo. Heading towars Las Palmas U-2 spotted a British ore carrier and sank her. 5 torps, 5 hits, 5 ships sunk. Tonnage 30,757. U2 headed to Las Palmas and docked with the German Supply ship Corrientes on the 13th. (There is where I am waiting for my next palying time day) U-2 refueled and rearmed. The crews mingled and had a feast in celebration of the victorious patrol. Talk turned to the armies advance in Poland, then the talk died down as each man went to his own thoughts; the dark cloud of war had fallen over Eurpoe, could Germany handle both Britian and France? Having resuppled, U-2s crew is resting and awaiting departure from the canary islands back to Germany, and the encounters with the enemy inbetween. After I played this patrol, my interest was intrigued, and I looked up information on the suppy ship corrientes online and found this link. a good read to any interested: http://books.google.com/books?id=YOO...esult&resnum=1 |
