USS Lionfish - Fall River, MA
 

Yeah, I know this is technically a copycat thread, but since we're discussing museum boats, here are some pictures I took of the Lionfish at Battleship Cove when I visited on Thursday.

The bow of the sub. They must have repainted Lionfish sometime in the past eight years, because the paint didn't look that great when I went in 2001.

The deck gun can still be trained and elevated, although I didn't have enough time to try it out myself. The paint on the bridge and aft deck could use some touchup.

Submarine life was no easy thing, and I'm sure the plexiglass panels obstructing all of the controls were more of a hindrance than a help.

This appears to be a device used in firing self-propelled explosive devices from the stern of the submarine, although it bears a strong resemblance to those things in the bow used for storing the Captain's 20-foot long green poops.

IIRC in Das Boot the diesels valves and springs are all exposed and a guy with an oil can wanders around them (or was that some other film?)

So where's all that gone?

Could you go up in the conning tower? One of these days, I'll actually get to climb up into the conning tower of a sub I visit. I've been to three and have yet been able/allowed to.:cry:

When I was a kid I was in "Sea Cadets" (Sn3/c) and on weekend a year we stayed aboard the USS JP Kennedy a Gearing-class destroyer and It was a good time withe the exception for the Middle watch. 0400-0600

About a month ago, my family flew down to San Fransico for the day and we went onboard the USS. Pampanito. Pretty cool.

While the ice-cream machine is historical, I think that having the ocasional and not informed visitor see it can actually cause the perverse effect of letting them think that the war in the pacific was a pleasure cruise for the submarine force. Which would not only be incorrect, but also unfair to those who sweated under the depth charges attacks or even perished for their land.

I hope there are somewhere around the proper information shields, so s to make people realize the true story :hmmm:
