USS Lionfish - Fall River, MA
Yeah, I know this is technically a copycat thread, but since we're discussing museum boats, here are some pictures I took of the Lionfish at Battleship Cove when I visited on Thursday.
The bow of the sub. They must have repainted Lionfish sometime in the past eight years, because the paint didn't look that great when I went in 2001. http://i28.tinypic.com/o6cvok.jpg The deck gun can still be trained and elevated, although I didn't have enough time to try it out myself. The paint on the bridge and aft deck could use some touchup. http://i26.tinypic.com/2gy8wmu.jpg A better view of the deck gun (a 5"/25 Mk 17 wet mount). You can find more information about this weapon here: http://navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_5-25_mk10.htm http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5...hipcove107.jpg I wasn't trying to be artsy fartsy when I took this one. Seriously. http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9...hipcove109.jpg Seriously, do I need to tell you what this is? http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/3...hipcove125.jpg The captain's bathroom...I think. http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/7...hipcove084.jpg The sonar station (sorry about the plexiglass.) http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5...hipcove086.jpg View looking forward into the Captain's bathroom. I hope those giant green things aren't what I think they are. http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/4...hipcove087.jpg The corridor leading to the control room. Good thing I'm not "big boned" anymore. http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8...hipcove088.jpg Submarine life was no easy thing, and I'm sure the plexiglass panels obstructing all of the controls were more of a hindrance than a help. http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8...hipcove091.jpg |
Great lookin boat!:yeah:
|
This is what I saw when I went down to the sub's basement to see if I could get the refrigerator working again.
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/4...hipcove090.jpg Everybody loves corridors. http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/5...hipcove092.jpg "What a boring Christmas Tree. Let's install some red lights." http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/1...hipcove093.jpg "Okay, who forgot to clean up after their mess?" http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/3...hipcove094.jpg "We've installed an ice cream machine as you requested, Captain. The bad news is, we had to remove the air conditioning." http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7...hipcove095.jpg My uncle Rudolph comes out of nowhere. http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2...hipcove096.jpg Having spent 37 years in the Navy, Rudy now finds the idea of being locked up in a steel tube for weeks with a good chance of drowning a nice one. http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7...hipcove097.jpg Phase 4 of Naval Geekery: Taking pictures of things inside submarines that you can't identify. http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/3...hipcove099.jpg Okay, now I'm just wasting memory. Good think I have a whole gigabyte of it. http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/3...hipcove100.jpg Here we see the two gigantic soup cans which the captain used to speak to the crew with, before the invention of the 1MC. http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/563...hipcove102.jpg |
Things that indicate stuff.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5...hipcove101.jpg "Ah sh*t! I forgot to pay my electric bill!" "Don't worry, I figured out how to make all of the gauges read zero!" http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/6...hipcove104.jpg Not surprisingly, the crew's toilet was a lot smaller than the Captain's. http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8...hipcove103.jpg This appears to be a device used in firing self-propelled explosive devices from the stern of the submarine, although it bears a strong resemblance to those things in the bow used for storing the Captain's 20-foot long green poops. http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4...hipcove106.jpg And a short video I shot inside the conning tower, which looks like crap because I was trying to hold onto the topmost rung of the ladder while shooting it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OORK_sMuI9M |
ok now this makes me hate living in colorado.....

Nice video, reminds me of panicky bits of Das Boot!
IIRC in Das Boot the diesels valves and springs are all exposed and a guy with an oil can wanders around them (or was that some other film?) So where's all that gone? |
Nice shots!
Thanks for sharing. It looks like she's in pretty good shape. Could you go up in the conning tower? One of these days, I'll actually get to climb up into the conning tower of a sub I visit. I've been to three and have yet been able/allowed to. :) |
Very nice!
Omg you guys are so spoiled on the other side of the ocean... |
Nice
|
Thanks for sharing! The Lionfish is VERY hard to find photos of.

When I was a kid I was in "Sea Cadets" (Sn3/c) and on weekend a year we stayed aboard the USS JP Kennedy a Gearing-class destroyer and It was a good time withe the exception for the Middle watch. 0400-0600

About a month ago, my family flew down to San Fransico for the day and we went onboard the USS. Pampanito. Pretty cool.

Thanks for sharing the pics... and the humor!

While the ice-cream machine is historical, I think that having the ocasional and not informed visitor see it can actually cause the perverse effect of letting them think that the war in the pacific was a pleasure cruise for the submarine force. Which would not only be incorrect, but also unfair to those who sweated under the depth charges attacks or even perished for their land.
I hope there are somewhere around the proper information shields, so s to make people realize the true story :hmmm: |
