Nautilus Submarine

Originally created by Sledgehammer427 and he has given me the files to work out the kinks to get the sub ready for use in game. When I got the files yesterday there was no ship wake. I fixed that quite easily. Next is making sure there are no torpedoes on the sub and fix up the texture.

More updates to come

To quote George Carlin, quoting a cat. "oh boy, oh boy, oh boy...."

I kind of figured you'd like this. I also want to try and get certain parts to light up so the sub looks like whis while submerged.

"Oh he's got another leg, oh boy oh boy....." :)

Just got an idea for the "eyes". Perhaps use spot lights. Not sure how they would be triggered, but that could work if they could fixed facing in a forward position. The surface fleet guys might know how to trigger them when it is the player's ship.

Also in reading 20,000 leagues it would seem the Nautilus was a very fast vessel, we're talking possible 30 kts when on an attack run. For cruising under water probably around 10 kts at standard (though actual speed numbers are really never given, terms for speed are usually abstract like "lighting fast, tremedous velocity, effortless movement through the wonders of the sea, " and such.

She was also alll electic and the hull was essential a double hull, with each hull part acting like the plates of a battery with the sea water being the electolite (I know, way out there, but could you imagine if this was done with an actual boat, limitless power), of course the Disney Nautilus had something like a Nuclear power plant. But no diesles. Perhaps integrating the Walter power plant for the attack would be in order.

I wish I could help with the design aspects, I have always loved the Goff Nautilus, and like the J.V. version as well. I would be glad to offer more info if you would like.

Darkfish has a way to connect an illuminating node to the periscopes ;)

EDIT: Pythos, The nautilus I built has a top speed of about 40 knots. that felt like a good attack speed, and it looked right in game and through a video comparison

Sophont 07-04-09 11:22 AM

Wikipedia claims that its top speed was 50 kts.

Ok cool, I'll have to ask him about it. The way i was thinking of doing it was to detach the parts that need illuminating and using the alertlight feature from the interior.

Heh, looks like I was underestimating the speed. 50kts sound incredible, and very damaging to what ever gets hit:)

I can't find a wiki page specific to the Nautilus itself. Can you direct me to it?

Can it ram to break the ships in half, without taking damage? :D

I don't know yet, but I'll find out once I finish up the texture.

It works by adding a 'periscope' containing the same models and dials as the instrument panel, only with self-illuminating textures. It's located a little below the panel, once you raise the periscope the illuminated panel gets above the non-illuminated and thus becomes visible.

That's the page I was taking it from.

Thanks for the link. I forgot about it being 70meters long. Actually quite small, just a little more than 200ft. Still a nice ride.

Silverwolf 07-04-09 07:30 PM

So I am working on the hull texture and was wondering what you guys think about this. I'm not really much of a texture artist so I pretty much mix and match things together in photoshop and see how they turn out.
